I am fairly new myself, and wish I had turned here before I started. I would have saved a bunch of money. My best set up right now is an itaste vv v3 and a protank 3. The itaste vv v3 is a passthrough stick battery. What that means is there's a mini-usb port at the bottom so you can vape on it while charging. I like the protank 3 because it's glass, and it's easy to use. the coils are easy to find and replace. Welcome to ECF! :)

There is no one best. Only what will be best for YOU. There are bottomfeeders, ultra high wattage, VV, VW, mechanical, etc... What do you want out of an e-cig? Ease of use? Super huge clouds of vapor? A hobby?

I use the Provari, which I consider to be the "iPhone" of the vaping world. It's not the most uberpowerful, but it's a bulletproof mod with excellent customer service and warranty, and is extremely easy to use(i.e. if you do something wrong, error code, but no worries).

Welcome!

My recommendation for a first timer is a mvp2 with an aspire bvc or protank 2 or evod.
Mvp2: great device with a lot of features that is solid, but the cost of most ego starter packs. It is a little bigger, but with that, you can get 1-3 or more days of use before having to recharge depending on your vape habits. There are no extra batteries to buy, and no extra chargers. It comes with a tank, but most say it's not worth your time. Most people upgrade to this kind of device after using egos. The learning curve is not huge, and if you are you are going to end up there, why not start there? IMO
The aspire nautilus bvc is a great tank by most accounts. The down side is its $35 or so. The replacement heads are more expensive, but last longer and perform better than other replacement heads.
The protank 2 and evod tanks can be found around $10 or so, and the replacement heads are $1 or so each. They last a week or so before it's time to replace them, depending on your vaping habits.

Juice: the best thing you can do is go to a local vape shop and taste test their juices.
Taste is subjective, so what some love may taste like poop to you. Also, just because it is good in the store doesn't mean you will like it when you get home. I recommend buying small bottles (10ml) at first. Also, your taste and smell will be coming back over the few months following completely quitting cigarette use. So you may find flavors you like during that period, you may hate after they smell/taste has fully returned.

Please let me know if any of this is Greek to you. I don't know your familiarity with terms, and I am happy to explain what you don't understand from my post!
I hope this helps!

Ignore mechanical mods for now, there is a ton to learn there. You may end up enjoying the hobby side of vaping, but the goal is to kick the cigarette habit first I'd imagine.
The mvp2 is a great device that you can start down the hobby side with if you chose to do so.
You are probably best fit with the itastevv3 or mvp2 IMO

This is good advice. You may want to look into the MVP.It's a box mod. It pretty much has the same features as the VV V3. MVP has a very long lasting battery and variable wattage. I have one and really like it. I don't use the watt mode, I prefer Voltage. I would get both if it's in your budget the MVP and VV V3 that way you would have a back up. Having a back up is very necessary if you want a better chance of succeeding. It's hard to kick the habit if your battery is dead.

I quit smoking using the products from lecig.com. Overall, they kinda suck but they are affordable and they do same day shipping. I would stick with the D1 Classic though as all the other products of theirs I bought are just terrible. The best one I bought I'm still currently using is the Innokin Inno. I bought it for $20 which included two tanks and the USB charger. I wouldn't get into the complicated stuff until you understand a little more. Like the vari volts and stuff.

Also, I'd say start with 12mg nicotine level (1.2%) it's kind of the middle ground. You can up it if it isn't enough, but it shouldn't be too much.
Try all kinds of flavors, don't just stick to tobaccos. Also, searching for something that tastes like your brand can be very frustrating. I did that for a few months and it really took a lot of the enjoyment out of the process.

Personally, I'd say stay away from cigalikes. They aren't very effective for most, it's more expensive, and frustraiting IMO. Its a pain having to charge those little batteries all the time and swap out flavor cartridges.

Ego batteries are good starters, but most people step up to MVP2 style at some point and find it to be much more satisfying. Again, I say start there. You must walk before you run, but I don't think the mvp2 is terribly complex. You spend 30 minutes figuring out the settings and how they work (watch a YouTube video or two), set it, and forget it. Then you have an enjoyable vape until you decide to start tweaking things to get even better.

Again, the great thing here is the price point and value. Great battery life and solid construction for what most ego starter packs cost. Don't let the box mod put you off, you carry around a pack of cigarettes and a lighter don't you? Again, I think it's a great starting device that will get you the satisfaction you need to get away from the cigarettes.

I started with an Evod kit. I figured it was a good deal for basically two devices. It was a good device to learn on and then I was able to move on to a Provari. My only suggestion with the Evod is to get a mini protank to use instead of the Evod tanks as I think the Evod tanks suck.

I agree about the innokin products, but would suggest instead of the MVP 2 try the itaste vv v3. The features are the same (same board inside). Yes, battery life is lower being an 800mah battery, but many don't like the size/form factor of a box mod, especially at first. Being able to vape while charging makes up for smaller battery, and ease of use and portability are an advantage. Another option for tanks is the kanger aerotank line...come in various sizes, heads are easy to replace, the new style atomizer heads are longer lasting now, and can handle more power, so you can run them at the full 11 watts/5 volts the itaste and MVP will put out (I haven't been off 11 watts for days now :p)

Thanks for all the posts but the language you are using is absolutely foreign to me. I have read, checked out sites and I am still soooo confused. I know at this point two things: I want to quit smoking and it doesn't matter how much I pay for the device because anything is better than paying $8.00 a day for a pack of cigs. If I buy the wrong ecig, I will continue to smoke. I have checked out starter kits and they talk about atomizers, cartorizers, coils etc... I am leaning towards the Kangertech but will also check out the MVP and the VV V3. Since I live in a city that offers ecigs only in convenience stores (lol) I have to order online and want to make sure I get all I need because shipping is high. If I buy a kangertech starter kit, do I need to get more coils?? And what is a coil?? Do I need to change a filter? How much ejuice should I get? I feel like I am learning a new language. What is a box mod? People, you are talking to a ecig virgin.

Yes, definitely an extra battery. Yes you need extra coils. They are what's inside the tank (the kanger) that heats up the juice. You just unscrew the tank, unscrew the little thing inside when it's not working anymore (the coil) and screw on a new one. YouTube is your best friend if you don't have someone to show you. Stay away from mods until you learn more. Actually, I have no wish for a mod, I'm perfectly happy with my innoken and protank 3 :)
