As you are first starting out. I personally recommend using 30 gauge a1 kanthal. This is the most versatile wire I have found. You can do both high or low ohm coils easily with this wire; however, using a evic you would want it to ohm out at 1.5 ohms or higher. Also check out super_x thread on microcoils. Its a good place to start learning the coils experience.

I also love cotton, but recommend silica to new vapors. Silica can be more forgiving and allow you to vape it pretty dry without ruining the wick.

If you can get your hands on some Koh Gen Do cotton, I highly suggest it.

I got mine from sephora.com. It's much easier to work with than the CVS sterile rolled cotton I've been using for the last year and it's claimed to be chemical free.

It's nice stuff and that 60 pad box will last a lifetime probably.

I store mine in a ziplock so the cotton stays fresh :)

Here's what the box says on the back:

I like a wicking media like cotton that I can thread thru the coil and adapt to the inside diameter of the coil :)

And if you like 30 ga, you will love 29 ga. I do.

Here's a little chart to show different resistances with 10 wrap micro coils :

Here's some micro coil 101 vids I made:

And if you wanna spend another 10-15 bucks, I highly suggest this artistic wire coil gizmo. It's all I use now. Makes perfect tension wrapped micro coils so easy :)

In case you haven't check out Rip Trippers on youtube - he has great videos for micro coil making - from beginner to expert.

One of his and mine favorite all around gauges kanthal is 28 gauge.

One of my favorite wraps: 28 gauge/ 5/64 drill bit / 11 wraps = 1.5 ohms I fit this coil into most any device from IGO-Ls (lots of room) to EVODs, pro tanks, etc. which have very little room.

I still use my IGO-L daily - easy to change out wick and burn clean coil for me on a daily basis. 28 gauge is very hardy, some have lasted me a couple of months.

Just have fun with it - the combinations and permutations of making coils is almost endless and very enjoyable hobby - OK in my case an addiction.

Wire is relatively inexpensive, as well as wicking material - so trying different gauges and wicking material - especially on your IGO-L will not cost you very much.

For a first time out if you choose cotton - I might suggest cotton yarn: peaches and cream available at walmart - boil dry. Easy to handle and wick coils because it is already in a rope shape and already matches diameter of 5/64 drill bit wound coil.
