I'm new to this but for cost efficiency, I'd like to rebuild my own wicks. I've watched videos, searched the forum, and still have questions:blink:. I'm operating an Ego Twist. I have an Evod and a Vivi Nova. My question, is it dangerous to rebuild my own wicks? What happens If I have a short? What is the best wick and wire? Any hints and tips you have will help greatly.

Thanks in advance

There's different methods to rebuild the heads, but you'll need:

wire: kanthal a1 32 gauge
wick: both silica (2mm for VVN and 3mm for EVOD) and cotton wicks are used most commonly.
digital multimeter or a device that have resistance reading function

Dangerous? Could be, even with short circuit protection of the EgoTwist, it's still possible to fry the device with a short (I fried 2 in the past). A DMM is highly recommended to check the resistance and shorts, a cheapo HF DMM like this is sufficient. For clearos, kanthal a1 32 gauge is recommended, a 5/4 coil should give you ~2.2-2.4ohms.

As for rebuilding EVOD/VVN (very similar), I recommended checking out this tuitorial:
Machine screw coil wrap for Vivi Nova / Kanger T3 - YouTube

I use a similar method (build the coil first) but use cotton wick instead (just pinch some cotton from cottonball and roll into a wick) and slide it into the coil.

After much trial and error, the wife and I just did my first vivi nova rewick and coil tonight. I'd highly recommend it - it's kind of fun (if you don't throw the Vivi nova on the floor after the first 5 coils end up in a mess of wire and wick, the 6th coil read 0.7ohms that I couldn't fix, and on more than one occasion you pull the wire so tight it cuts the silica wicks)

I used the video Myrany referenced above. Watched it through 2-3 times and then went through it step by step. He does make wrapping the coil look easy, like I said, this was the 7th time lucky for me - but I am a ham-fisted heathen.

You will need a way to check the ohms for sure though, I could have fried my batteries if I didn't have a way to check. Go for it though, it's a whole other thing to obsess over :D

Trick I use to keep from winding hte coil to tight. I take a largish paperclip and unbend it and hold it with the wicks then wrap the coil around BOTH the wicks and the paperclip. I can then set the whole thing in the slot and do the leads/caps. Then just slide the paperclip out.

Helps keep the coil from being too tight AND from me pulling the leads too hard and sinking the coil too far down in the body.
