Hey all,

I'm by no means a new vaper, just new to the site. I recently have been experiencing problems with a very metallic taste in my rda builds, no matter what the build. My last build was as follows:

Single dual strand parallel coil
26 guage kanthal from kidneypuncher
5/64 wrap
4 total wraps
~ 0.3 Ohm
on both an authentic tugboat v2 and a plume veil clone
organic cotton wick

I built identical coils on both RDA's and used one on an authentic stringray x and an IPV2 v2s. The stringray had great vapor production for the first hit or so, but after a while, the hits became metallic tasting. Unbearably so. I would have to rewick the cotton (which was always soaked when the metallic taste happened) and the process repeated. I tried using VW on the ipv to figure out if that was the issue, but the problem returned In full force from 30W and above, which makes no sense. I'm thoroughly confused and if anyone can give me advice, I'd be appreciative. Also feel free to ask for Amy additional information.

side note: the other coil I tried was a single coil, 8 wrap with 26g kanthal around a 5/64 at about 0.7 ohms, which produced a burnt taste as well.

On one, I did not preheat the wire. On the tugboat, I did, and both are having issues. The coils were nearly perfect and I can post pictures if need be. Posts were screwed down tightly, and in the parallel, there was no wire overlap. The juice is one which I use pretty frequently, and is a max VG from the vapers knoll. The wire could be a possibility but it has been the same wire I've used for many builds (probably about 18-20).

You may wanna do what I do ( most don't.) What I do with all my RBA/ RTA is build a coil like normal, do a couple dry burns and get it perfect. Then I boil some distilled water (make sure to have a wooden spoon in there to not superheat it), and chuck the whole deck in to boil for 5 mins. Let the water cool, fish em out and dry the best I can. Leave em in a dry spot for 24 hours minimum. Then wick and add juice and you are good to go.

Usually I find a thin film of machine oil on the top of the water that didnt get burned off completely during the dry burns. It may be time consuming but it usually fixes any issues with a metallic taste.

Could also be that some of the parts on the build aren't 100% stainless and the plating is wearing off exposing some gross metal. But I doubt that, has never happened to me.

Just to add: I've always associated the taste you're talking about with metal doing things it shouldn't: hot legs, wicking issues (too much wick or not enough), or a short. If I had to guess: play with the wicking and then the coils. I know, you've been doing the exact same wick for forever and know what you're doing, but there seems to be this weird patch for everyone where they don't consciously change the amount they're using yet they do.

Hail-mary: any chance you're reusing a drip-tip?
Hailing hail-mary: machine oil can hide in weird, weird places -- deep in positive posts, etc. Though it seems unlikely that it's suddenly both.

I've definitely heard of some clones using plating for some of their posts/washers which can eventually start to burn off at low-ohms, but shouldn't be an issue with an authentic tugboat -- and shorts seem unlikely due to switching mods.
