hi guys, I have purchased a 1:1 velocity clone from fasttech after seeing good reviews on youtube. after using it the first time it was amazing in performance. now whenever I use it I dont get as much flavor or sometimes a metallic taste. I always wash out my rda and leave it to dry before putting in new coil. I always dry burn my coils before wicking and have also tried running the flame from the cooker over the coil to ensure any machine oil residue is gone. but still to no avail, I am yet experience the amazing taste that my rda once had.

I always use organic japanese cotton

I have tried:
- different brands of kanthal such as premade ones from ebay, UD kanthal, tobecco clapton coils
- different wattages
- different eliquids (which i have also tried on my mutation x v4, which at the moment out performs the velocity)
- tried running it in both single and dual coil modes

any suggestions?

Have you tried soaking everything in a dental cleaner like Polident and leave it for overnight? I always do that with new atomizers.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
but the thing is it worked perfectly without any issues from the first use right out of the box. which is why I am thinking this may not work as the bad taste started to occur after the second time i rinsed it out and changed coils.

one other thing i forgot to mention was that the rda contained no visible machine oil whatsoever when first received.

Take it completely apart. Clean each part with soap and water. Rinse and soak in an alcohol bath then rinse with water wipe dry the parts and reassemble. Dry burn your coils and verify that there are no signs of hot spots and/or hot leg. Complete the build and vape.
I can confirm that my builds have never consisted of any hit legs/spots.

Do you have a trustworthy local B&M? A good builder may be able to spot what you are missing.

Think Logically about what you are attempting to solve, as you work through.

1) Metal is Metal and should not change - Make sure it is clean and that should be the extent of concern with change.
2) Insulators there are (2)
a. Deck
b. Base of Center Pin
As stated - Strip, inspect, Clean, verify fit.
3) Air Flow - Make sure you are using the same air opening setup. Try changing the see if there is a difference.
4) Coil - Are you making the Same coil/using the same coil as the first time?
Are you spacing and aligning to the air passages Exactly the same as the first time?
5) Wicking - kind of critical. To little and you Will get a Metallic taste, Coil heating to quickly with little liquid on wire. Of course, to much and you get burnt hits from choking.
6) The Mod itself - If possible, confirm no internal changes by testing same build on the Mod and then on another Device.
An improper resistance reading or wattage output can cause drastic changes.

* Reading your post, it sounds like you may have 2(or more) small issues causing one more noticeable bad experience.
a) Less Flavor - lower power, coil misalignment or air flow change
b) metalic taste - insufficient wicking

* Insulator failure normally results in burnt plastic taste.

Best of luck solving!

thank you for your help

- my coils are always alligned to the air hole in the rda to ensure the airflow hits the coil directly
- when wicking i use just the right amount of cotton, not too much or too little. I make sure the cotton can be passed through the coil not causing enough tension to dislodge the coil, but just enough to give it a snug fit.
- when i apply eliquid i make sure to squeeze all over the cotton and also over the wire (this is what I do with my other RDA's and it works fine. it also worked perfect with this RDA when it first arrived)

*very recently I have started experiencing lower amounts of vapour production, but when i crank the watts up to make up for this I get bad flavour.

is it time to get a replacement?

Assuming all is as you say and correct - (Maybe, maybe not - still not working), What Device are you powering with? Did not see the Mod listed.
There are a rash of minor issues withing several lines. Even with almost perfect records, some mods within a manufacture batch may develop individual issues.

Example - my IPV-mini2, after almost a year, suddenly started reading resistance at 2x actual. No other issues with the Mod and I can still use it by reducing wattage requested.(knowing there is a problem)

hrmph.
well it probably means nothing but the first thing that hits me in the face is you chose the black version.
I personally wouldn't buy a colored topper; it's all about chemistry; who knows what material that is (especially coming from China - remember lead paint from China?)

Anyways one thing to look at is completely removing the grub screws and cleaning them and making sure the insides of those posts where the grub screws screw in get a good soak in case there's any hardened gunk sitting around inside there.

Nice choice of mod.
I have (2) one for the wife and one for myself. Never had any issue with either and thinking we can stick to the Velocity/build conundrum.

Perhaps, if the Deck was painted or chemically treated to color. As is visible in the design, All liquid surfaces are clean SS.

Op have you changed Drip tips? I get off taste from Both Aluminum and Brass....actually avoid Copper also. I just happen to be more sensitive than some.

A Few Video Build/reviews that may help:

the drip tip for this RDA is plastic. had no problem in the past with other plastic drip tips. and yes i have used a different plsatic drip tip on this RDA and still the same issue
