Help With Variable Volt

Hello everyone. I know I don't often post here, but I have made a few mods in the past, just nothing to write home about so I never posted.
Anyway, I know a regular schematic for a basic ecig, what I want is to add a VV to a mod I have in mind. The thing is, it needs to be smallish. Basically, I have a bout 8 mm width and a good amount of length to work with.
I also know I will be working either with one short 3.7v batt, or two AA size batts..whichever you guys think will work best, but I tring to keep the batt size small as well, and preferable a single one.
I would like to volts to go from say 3.7 volts to about 5 volts if possible- kinda like on the ego booster thats out now....
Any help would be really appreciated.

What battery are you thinking about that's 8mm in width? I've never seen one that narrow

I think he's talking about the space he has to work a vv unit into para. I think. Didn't you have a little vv unit that screwed onto an atty that would work in a space like that

Yeah, its basically that the space in the boc I want to use leaves with about 8 mm and a bit of length. I could change the box, but I haven't decided what batt to use, so I'd rather figure out a sall vv version and keep my options open for the batts. Ideally the shape of everything would stay as is, as its kinda my point for the mod.
I've been reading about VV for a few days and I get it in principle. But the specifics are what are throwing me off, and researching parts is all new to me.
I know I will need a voltage regulator, two resistors (? is that the word) but what specs and getting them small is my problem. I'd also like the voltage dial to make no more than one turn from lowest to highest.
Ideally something like the ego booster (the inner cirucuit board) would be great.. but I have no idea whats going on there tech wise.
Someone please help? I just need the smallest conifguration of a vv possible. I'll figure out the rest.
