I recently bought a joyetech eVic-VTC Mini. I'm running it as it came out of the box with the eGo One Mega VT atomizer, with a nickle coil. It's in VT-Ni mode with the temp set at 500 degrees and the power set at 30.0 watts. Overall, I'm very happy with how it works but I do have a couple of questions.
  • Do the settings I'm using seem reasonable and safe?
  • The kit comes with a titanium replacement coil. What are the pros and cons between nickle and titanium coils?
  • My display is not quite the same as the one pictured in the manual. Why would that be?
Thanks in advance for any answers or advice anyone would be able to respond with.

Yes, entirely reasonable and safe.

Some people like one type of wire better than the other. Some people think Ni wires are dangerous because they can outgas heavy metal poisons in vapor form if overheated. I personally think that less than likely as Ni does not do this at vaping temps, but it is possible if dry burning the coils, which you won't do in a prefab coil head. Some people think Ti tastes better than Ni. For my part, I gave up on TC when Ni wire was all that was available because it won't work except with spaced coils and I hate them. I never tired Ti wire, and I think Stainless rocks the house in TC mode; SS is the best tasting wire I have yet found.

Firmware upgrades, probably.

They did 'stuff' (firmware) to the eVic mini when they took it up from 60w to some new level power. Maybe this has something to do with the display.
500 degrees is probably where you want to set it. I use mine lower, but the temp control kicks in rather too often.
Some folk want to vape certain metals I guess. Nickel seems ok to me, but maybe some people get a weird taste or know they are allergic.

Oops, I have the power set at 35.0 watts, not 30.0.
Still entirely reasonable and safe. Wattage settings in TC mode don't matter a lot, unless you are suffering significant delay from pushing the fire button until you get vapor, in which case they should be increased. The mod treats your wattage setting as a "do not exceed" value, and often runs under it. It will use your set watts to bring the wire to the temp you set, and then back off the power to hold it there.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think Joye offers an SS coil as a prefab option though they do sell a coil unit that's rebuildable. Could I wind that with stainless wire? I was thinking about going the build it yourself route in the future but am going to try the Ti coil when the one that's in it now needs to be replaced.

Yes and no. Stainless has the advantage of being able to be used in either TC or wattage modes. If you make a stainless coil that meets the resistance requirements for your mod, it can definitely be run in wattage mode. To run it in TC mode requires firmware that does it-- I don't know if yours has it or not-- and, because stainless wires come in several grades suitable for vaping, each one of which has a different TCR profile, you really need a mod that accepts TCR input, or you are limited to whatever grade of stainless the algorithm is set for.

It does have TCR but, in addition to VT-Ni and VT-Ti modes, there is a VT-SS mode. I'm pretty sure that would be for stainless. One reason I settled on this one was the versatility of the firmware.

Good enough. The following post says it has TCR functionality, so that'll work. Here's a link for the TCRs of various wires.

Actually I think the evic vtc is different; (I have one); mine seems to default 30 watts until it sees the right temperature, then it drops wattage

Mine tops out at 75w so apparently, it came with the latest firmware.
