Hello there guys.

I've been reading on this forum for quite a while, but haven't actually signed up until now.

I've been vaping for 2/3 months after smoking for 5/6 years and it's just became enough is enough with the dirty cigs.

Anyways... I started on the pen I bought from a local shop and on about 18mg of nicotine with that device for about 2 months. Now I've decided I wanted to upgrade to something and popped into VIP cigarettes and told him my situation and I want something that will satisfy me a bit more.

With that being said after a good 20-25 minutes of speaking to the guy I decided on the innokin cool fire IV. Now I don't have the greatest of vape knowledge, but this is what he convinced me into and I'm hoping I did not make a bad choice so I was hoping you guys might be able to help out!

I've looked into the whole sub ohm vaping and what not and understand the simple concept, but with this sort of device, the real question is, is it safe? I read horror stories everywhere about batteries doing this and that and well if that's the case I don't wana get myself into that.

As a general rule of thumb, what should I do and what should I not do?

Thank you guys and glad to be a part of this community!

Hi David and welcome to the forum. The Coolfire IV is a nice little mod and great for beginners. It is a regulated mod which is good for safety. I haven't heard of any safety problems with that mod. The most important concern is to use the proper charging gear and you shouldn't have any issues.

Sub ohming is not much different than where you are now. It will give you more vapor, use more juice and uses up the battery faster. It's something most people grow into, or at least experience in their vape journey. Most people usually cut their nicotine level in half or more when moving into the sub ohm realm. The better the delivery device the more juice consumed and therefore the more nicotine ingested.

I stayed with my Nautilus Mini tanks for months before moving into sub ohm vape. I'd suggest the Kanger Subtank Mini if you decide to go there. It has factory coils available, plus an rba where you can build and wick your own (cheaper way to go than store bought).

The only real advice I can give is to vape to your own comfort zone. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Don't get caught up in the hype of "gotta vape at 50 watts" to prove your manhood. There are a huge number of content vapers who don't vape over 15 watts, and I was one of them for at least 6 months. Relax and enjoy.

Hello and welcome to the forum @David1193. Glad to have you here!:)

You made a GREAT choice! Your devise has built in safety so no problems there. What tank did you get to go with the Coolfire?

Priming a Coil

When you are using a new coil for the first time, the wicks (usually they are cotton) have to be primed well with juice. If they are not primed well the cotton will burn. Once the cotton is burned the harsh/burnt taste doesn't go away.

To prime the coil, drop 5-8 drops (sometimes less/more depending on the size of the coil head) of juice right inside the coil, another drop of juice in all the holes on the side of the coil. Put the coil in the base.
  • If Bottom Filling - Fill the tank and then screw the base back onto the tank.
  • If Top Filling (some of the newer tanks are top filled) - Screw the tank on the base and then top fill it.
Once you put the tank on the battery give it several unpowered primer puffs. This will make sure the wick is fully saturated.

Rule of Thumb

The rule of thumb for EVERY vape device you'll ever own is the same. Start low power (wattage or voltage), take a draw and bump it up to repeat. If it starts to taste funny, gets too hot or tastes burnt, back it down. Different flavors will have different sweet spots so you just have to experiment.

Charging

Although most regulated have over-discharge protection, there are some safety guidelines I like to follow:

1. Always use the charger that comes with the mod/battery.
2. Plug the usb into a wall wart. Plugging it into your computers usb port takes the battery much longer to charge and if the batteries protection fails you could risk blowing your computers motherboard.
3. Don't leave the battery charging when someone is not around to unplug it when it is done charging. I also would not charge it overnight for the same reason.

Nicotine

A "general guideline" for nicotine concentration in e-liquid to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. If you are subohming (resistance under 1.0Ω) cut these nicotine levels by at least 50%.

06 mg = 10 cigarettes or less
12 mg = 20 cigarettes
18 mg = 30 cigarettes
24 mg = 40 cigarettes

eLiquid/Juice

PG = Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin.

VG = Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick. Often labeled just "Glycerin"

PG and VG are often used together in different ratios in e-liquid. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Many juice vendors offer a range of different ratios as far as PG/VG.

Different Resistance Coils

Lower Ohm Coils Will:

  • Heat The Coil Faster
  • Produce More Vapor
  • Drain The Battery Faster
  • Use E-Juice Faster
  • Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape
Higher Ohm Coils Will:
  • Heat The Coil Slower, Which Will Produce “Less” Vapor
  • Provide A “Cooler” Tasting Vape
  • Use Less E-Juice
  • Prolong Battery Life
A variable power devise/mod (voltage and/or wattage) is advantageous in being able to adjust the power output to the user's preference. Not all flavors taste their best at a single fixed voltage. For example, most fruit flavors are best at a lower power setting, while flavors like tobacco or coffee flavors may taste better at a higher setting. However, this is very subjective to the individual vaper's personal taste.

I understand everything you're saying. I won't get caught up in it all and will take your advise!

I went from 18mg to 8mg with this new device so that should be okay for now. Also, what would you recommend charging it via? I was supplied the USB charging cable and that's it.

The usb is the proper way. Most people use a wall plug for the usb instead of the pc (don't risk the pc that way). The Coolfire iV requires a 1 Amp wall plug. You can usually find one for a couple dollars at the dollar store, k mart or Wallyworld. Just double check it's a 1 Amp as they make 2 amp for some electronics. A .5 Amp will work but it will recharge slow.

The Cool Fire 4 is an excellent choice for a new vaper. It will work fine for Mouth to Lung vaping-- the kind you did on your pen-- and is powerful enough to fire subohm coils down into the .5ish Ω range. You'll find that iSub a good tank as well. If it gets too powerful vaping subohm, try a Nautilus or a GS Air tank and go back to MTL. You should have no safety considerations to plague you with that rig. One caveat: when subohming, you may wish to cut your nic level as they make a lot more vapor per hit and you'll be getting more. Hi-nic juices can be salvaged by buying some 0nic in the same flavor and mixing by volume to attain a lower nic level. Good luck and happy vaping. Sing out if you have more questions.

VIP sold you a Coolfire 4?

Wow. How strange is that. I thought VIP only sold 'Photon' eGos and insanely over-priced atomizer heads and crud juice. Oh... and diacetyl butterscotch e-liquid and 45p H2s for £7.99...

Forgive me. (I am not a vape snob, I promise...)

That's an interesting change of tack.

Anyway... you have probably bought the most respected make for 'internal' battery mods. Innokin have been making stuff like this for a good few years. MVP 1,2,3,Pro etc. Coolfire 1,2,4 and now 4 plus. They also do the 'disrupter' mod.
It is comfortably the #1 choice. Less Innokin mods get returned than any of the others, according to many shop owners.

So - NICE WORK. :)

The iSub tank is good and the coils last a fairly decent amount of time.
When you need replacements, if you find VIP a little expensive, then try here

Myepack.co.uk

At the moment, at VIP online, the coils are £7.99 (5 pack) which is great.

Anway.... Welcome @David1193 :)

PS. The story with VIP is long and complicated.
They sold out to an American Conglomerate which 'thinks' it's doing a great job and is trying to attract investment, globally. (You should read the utter drivel they spout... it sets new standards) The trouble is, the share price has bombed from $20 to $0.23 which is ... well ... pretty much the end. They should have been de-listed by the NYSE except for some miracle, they survived.
This big over-arching company was basically the world leader in extortionate-price cig-a-likes. (excluding Whitecloud and VaporFi, of course...)
However, business is so dreadful, they have slashed all the prices of the cig-a-like brands so as not to disappear into the great vacuum of financial insolvency.

If you want to support your VIP store, you should do, of course.
They have their backs against the wall.
I would be happy to see VIP grow back into the respected brand it almost became... not for the megalomaniacs who run the operation from the US, but for the local employees in the UK.
They charged too much for too long and deserved to go under... but then they sold out (good for the directors) and now things are headed in a new direction.
... which is also extremely odd, as fairly soon the big tanks will be banned/illegal and the liquids will need licensing.

Do they actually still sell plastic 45p clearomisers for £7.99?

Wow, I never knew all that!

Well I got my cool fire 4 plus the iSub tank and 3 "premium" 10ml oils for 45 pounds. As for the clearo's I think I seen them for like 3 pound in there so it's gone down a bit from 7.99.

Good news all round then. :)

You did well though. Online, VIP charge £40 for the Coolfire 4 kit.
They call it the 'express kit' which usually means no tank. But, it comes with a tank...
.. and you got 3 e-liquids for £5 then... Not bad!

As I say... keep an eye on them should you get an addictive shopping habit for the brand/shop. From what you say though, it seems like they have turned a corner. :)

PS. Most of my favourite e-liquids (juices) are about £5.50 for 30ml.
(just for info really....)
