Hi! Intro and Questions, burnt taste

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone is doing good! I have been using an ecig off and on since December 2013. Made it a month without a real cig but the small smoke shop I go to doesn't have hours to allow me to get to during the week and closed on Sundays. I started with a cheap ecig and tank and it kept breaking or cracking so my time without a real one would get interrupted with needing to buy a new tank!

I finally made the switch to the Aspire nautlis mini tank and better battery and then to the iStick and the large nautlis tank. Its been great not having to refill it during the day at work and the iStick staying charged!

Lately when I refill the tank, it tastes burnt. Then it is fine, then a few hours later of not using it, burnt taste again. I have changed the coil, let it set, all of the stuff I have read, but it is still doing it and no idea why! I know there were some "bad" batches of the BVC Coils, which I experienced that as well, but this is another new pack and was working great until I changed the coil again. Even today, it was fine when I woke up, haven't changed or added juice, but now out of no where it is back to tasting burnt, smelling burnt, etc.

I use the same juice as I have since the day I got one, like it and sticking with it. It is from the small smoke shop and is only "local" but I like it.. same flavor and all. I have the iStick down to the lowest 3.0 Volt, and read online to change the airflow to the smallest hole for awhile, that worked, but I like it set on the next to biggest air flow hole. So once it tastes right again I switch it and it will be good for awhile but then back to burnt.

I need help! I have cut back to 3 real cigs since I upgrade to this tank and battery but I need it to taste right! And I don't want to keep changing the coil over and over when it doesn't need to be changed!

Ideas and suggestions?!

Thanks, and looking forward to reading everyones posts, experiences, and see what else is out there!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here!:)

I too use the Nautilus with the BVC's, airflow wide open. Using 50/50 juice I sometime start to experience what could become a dry hit if I were to continue vaping.

All I do is cover the airflow hole and blow into my drip tip a couple of times. Bubbles rise to the surface (i.e. more juice is being fed to the coil) and I can continue to vape.

Here are some getting started links for you.

First of all, welcome to the forum. :)

Anyone who has been vaping for a period of time will agree that it is a JOURNEY. By that, I mean everyone has had to experiment by trial and error to find the gear and e-liquid which works best for them. There's no single piece of gear or e-liquid which works for everyone, or else there would be no need for such a variety of gear or e-liquids.

You are using one of the more simpler juice attachments available - a clearomizer. They are often used by beginners because they are simple to use and fill. However, they have their shortcomings. Most use a thin piece of silica string as the wick; silica is not the best flavor carrier and is often inadequate to carry enough e-liquid to the coil to vaporize ... leading to dry or burnt hits with muted flavor.

Cartotanks use cartomizers in their tanks. Polyfil is used as the wick, and represents a much larger mass in carrying e-liquid to the coil and is a better flavor carrier. They take a little longer to set up initually. The cartomizers last as long or longer than the replacement coils in a clearomizer.

If you don't mind doing your own coils and wicks, a rebuildable drip atomizer (RDA) or rebuildable tank atomizer (RTA) provides the best flavor and vapor production, with the least likelihood for dry or burnt hits. You'll go through more e-liquid in the process (you're getting more vapor in return), but the flavor is so much better than anything factory made.

Is It a Carto, a Tank, or What?

E-liquid generally has two basic components, besides the nicotine and flavoring agents. Propolyne glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). VG is thicker & more dense in viscosity so some wicking mediums have trouble delivering it to the coil. VG is responsible for vapor production. PG is thinner and is the major flavor carrier, and also is somewhat responsible for the "throat hit". Nicotine is responsible for most of the throat hit.

Hi SomethingWitty and welcome to the forum!

A modification I use with the Nautilus Mini coils is to stick a pin or needle into the four juice holes and wiggle it around a bit. it loosens up the wicking fibers and allows better juice flow to the coil.

Hope it helps and Happy Vaping!
