I never got pains, but at first my lungs wanted to reject vapor, just as they wanted to reject smoke when I started smoking. High nicotine can be harsh. Some people actually have an allergy to pg (propylene glycol) which is an ingredient in most eliquids.
What type of vape device do you have and what juice?

I can't say that I have read of complaints of pain in the lungs with vaping. I have heard of sore throat and coughing.

What devices specifically are you using? Did you properly "prime" and "break in" your coils? The below video is for the Crown tank, but the principles shown are relevant for any tank. Not priming or breaking in the coils properly could theoretically cause pain in the lungs.

When you first began to smoke, you probably coughed and maybe had some pain in your lungs. Those symptoms probably went away over time as your body adjusted to smoking.

Vaping is different from smoking, although the process may seem similar. It may take your body some time to adjust to vapor, just as it did to smoke.

There are different inhalation techniques (MTL - mouth to lung and DTL - direct to lung) for vaping. The draw technique for vaping is different from smoking. Smoking vs Vaping Differences

:danger: Please be advised that coming to a vaping internet forum is not the place to ask for medical advice. Should you continue to have pain in your lungs from vaping, I would think common sense would dictate to stop and to seek the advice of your medical practitioner.

Hi all

I've been a smoker for many years and trying to quit. The reason I have joined is that I am trying to find out why I get pain in my lungs when I use the e cig. So disappointing!

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm just wondering why the pain.

Thanks.
are you using freebase nicotine or nicotine salts?

Without knowing what you're using no one can do much more than guess.

Nic mg/ml?
Pg/Vg ratio?
What set up are you using? cig a like, all in one, power device/tank?
Inhalation technique? (mtl/dtl)
What delivery device are you using? (tank, clearo etc...)
If so, which replaceable head /coil / cartridge and Ω /resistance are you using?
Did you properly prime the wicking material before use?
What power level are you using?

Have you been to the doctor to rule out any medical issues?

Hi and Welcome-
Pain in my lungs from cigarette smoking- yes, that is why I quit almost 4 years ago.
Pain in my lungs from vaping- no ! Took me a few weeks to get used to vaping and clearing my lungs of over 30 years of what cigarette smoking did. Drink lots of water, it helps.
Wishing you the best of luck.
If pain continues you should see a doctor.

Thank you all for your replies.

I can see I need to do a lot more reading up on e-cigs.

I should have mentioned that I have COPD and other health problems.

@Baditude Thanks for video's. I will watch them.

@flavourchaser I don't know if they are free base nicotine or salt based. I will try to find out.

@Topwater Elvis Thanks for your reply...

I bought two different types.
One is Endura T18
- 1000mAh Capacity with a coil optimized output of 14Watts at 1.5.
- 100% Japanese Organic Cotton
-2.5ml Stainless Steel & Pyrex Glass Tank

The second device is aspire X30
- 30W 2000mah LiPo compact Mod
- Nautilus X Tank with 1.*Q U-tech Coil

I can't tell you much about the nicotine juice I am using. On the bottle it says British VG and there is a number 6. I did ask for a lower nicotine level. I think from memory it is a mild or medium. Sorry about all this vagueness.

I will try and learn more over the next couple of weeks. Thanks again.

@Snapdragon Thanks. Great to hear you gave up smoking after 30 years. I can see how the e-cigs work. I was so disappointed because I know I would have been able to quit smoking with the e-cig

I will give the e-cig another try in a few weeks after studying up more and making sure I have the set up done properly.

Welcome and glad you joined.
You might want to post again if none of the suggestions seem to work. There are many causes that could create you lung pain. Normally it's throat pain I hear the most about. If you post back, be sure to list the remedies that did not help much or didn't work at all.
If USP VG or PF is available to try at your local B&M vape shop, might try vaping each in turn, without nicotine and see if it is an allergy problem.

It could be that I am allergic to pg. Thanks for mentioning. I'll keep trying to figure it out. I'll get back to you on the juice, etc.

Welcome. I know you will find a solution on this forum. Folks here are super patient and willing to help so ask a thousand questions if that’s what it takes to get you comfortable with vaping.
Thanks @Mimi25 I appreciate you all posting a reply and have noticed how patient everyone is. It really is great and I hope to learn as much as I can.

Hi Ruther. Welcome to the ECF.

The Upside to e-Cigarettes is that there is Almost an Unlimited Amount of Combinations for Hardware/e-Liquids that a user can choose from to change the Type of Hit you will get.

Coil Ohms
Amount of Watts
Airflow Settings
Single Coils, Dual Coils, Multiple Coils
e-Liquid Nicotine Level
e-Liquid PG to VG Ratio's
(The List Kinda Goes On and On...)

The Downside though, for a New User to e-Cigarettes, is that there is Almost an Unlimited Amount of Combinations for Hardware/e-Liquids that a user can choose from to change the Type of Hit you will get.

Finding what One Likes and Works Best can take some Time. And sometimes some Trial and Error.

I'm sure you can Find a Combination of Hardware and some e-Liquids that work for You. So Don't Give Up.

I have heard it said that folks vaping with COPD can find high VG juices to cause a "heavy or congested" feeling in the lungs although not actual pain, and I can't SUBSTANTIATE that with anything.

You are kind of in a pickle given you have COPD and it could be a LOT of things (I myself was ALMOST dx with COPD well it was coming, anyway) but I was also PG SENSITIVE, not VG sensitive. So, it's just hard to say.

Things I have generally heard advised for COPD vaping;
MTL setup, lower volume of vapor higher PG, higher nic (Unless in fact you are allergic to PG, in which case you'd need high or max VG).
If the COPD is advanced, there is the option of Mouth to nose vaping, inhale, hold in your mouth, then exhale through mouth and nose. I don't know if it's necessarily the MOST SATSFYING way of vaping, but your mucus membranes DO absorb plenty of nicotine and vape, so that may be an option until things settle down.

Swedish snus (sold here under the name "general" snus) it's a harm reduction product that has gained a fair amount of traction in Europe and now even here. It's a small pouch that you tuck into your mouth where it is more comfortable. Some folks swear by it, I tried it for the first time yesterday, will be potentially working places I can't vape frequently and etc.

Above all if nothing is working consult your pulmonologist for suggestions. Because I WILL NOTE ALL of the above, I've heard, sometimes people report success, etc., but it's more anecdotal and I am not a doctor and etc.

Best of luck,

Anna
