Loading the WOL uses a lot of server resources. It requires multiple queries to the database and increases the load on the servers. WIthout going into a long winded explanation about load averages, lower load means better performance. Lowering the load averages means we can serve more users before we become "CPU bound" and the server becomes unresponsive due to overload.

Please try all the various script and ad blocking solutions if your PC is badly affected. There are numerous plugins for Firefox that will help.

Or use Opera, it usually loads the page content first, and if the various add-ons take another 30 seconds or don't load, it's not critical. Page content basically loads in 8 seconds for me, 3,000 miles from the server, in another country, and that's an OK speed considering the page load weight of the forum software plus addons.

i've managed to rid myself of all social buttons but f connect! and achieve a very decent loading speed whenever f connect disappears from the top of the page but the moment it's back it makes everything lag.
is there a benefit to ecf from that button? it was gone for the longest time back last year due to concerns of spreading virus infections. sure wish ecf could do without that one .....

btw roly, ie8 also loads page content first but you can't scroll down very far till f connect is up and running. and i do have ff and chrome now as last resorts for especially bad days but i still prefer ie, guess my loyality won't change ;)

Tibs, you can definitely get rid of it with blocking programs. I haven't seen that button since the whole social widget uproar and adjusting my Adblock filters (I also block all scripts from facebook.net and fbcdn.net in Noscript). Originally, I still had a few errant buttons and whatnot that showed up, but on my new laptop I just did a fresh install of the latest versions of everything (default filter in Adblock now includes social widgets btw, so I didn't even need to add the second filter this time) and now my screen is cleaner than I ever imagined it could be :)
