Granted, this is from June, but still promising: Higher Florida cigarette tax could increase sales of e-cigarettes - St. Petersburg Times

When Florida's new $1 tax on cigarettes takes effect in about three weeks, it should discourage at least marginal and cost-conscious smokers from lighting up as often and dissuade youngsters from getting hooked in the first place.
At least in theory.
One unintended consequence might be to encourage folks to try what I must admit is a weird concept to me:
The electronic cigarette.
A Chinese invention, the "e-cigarette" is basically a steel tube meant to look like a cigarette. It contains a battery, a nicotine cartridge and an atomizer. Puff on the end and the cigarette glows (thanks to the battery and a light-emitting diode), and the nicotine-water combo is vaporized so you can breathe in the mixture as if it's a nicotine hit from a tobacco cigarette.....Higher Florida cigarette tax could increase sales of e-cigarettes - St. Petersburg Times

It did have this effect... +1 for me. Prices were raised about $2/pack, first by the feds then by the state.

Trivia: Who said this: "If you make less than $250,000 a year, you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime"
What's been going on with cigarette taxes sucks and is abusive as far as I'm concerned. But that triva question is irrelevant to cig taxes, as the statement was specifically about income tax. Cigarette taxes have been an easy target for years.

He's a lawyer, if that's what he meant he should have replaced 'any' with 'income tax'. He was very specific, over and over again, always: "any of your taxes." Naturally it would apply to 'any' taxes he had control over increasing, and it was indeed he who signed this tax increase. At the very least it's intellectually dishonest.

He's running for Senate. He had to put some marks on the books to make his "track record" look better... par for course of most politicians. At least now, you know how to vote.

That is a lot of the reason I changed to vaping. I was getting 2 cartons at around $31 then it went to $70, enough is enough. Glad i switched, but the initial cost has killed me. Now just need the wife to get fully on board. She smokes Marlboro @ $53 a carton, she is trying, but just can't seem to quit the anologs.

There were times he specifically referred to income tax, payroll tax and capital gains tax. While I am among the people who didn't expect that no new taxes of any kind would be passed in four years, I can understand your feelings - and don't have confidence in his or any other politician's campaign promises sticking after electrion.

Obama inherited a horrible mess. And there's no question the three presidents prior to Obama were also guilty of breaking promises and/or lying to us. I've yet to see a politician that lives up to all his campaign promises. But it's often at least partially due the reality of the circumstances they have to function in. The first president Bush also broke his promise after saying "Read my lips - no new taxes." As a CNN senior editor said, "It's never easy to go back on a campaign promise. However, it's been done before and it may need to be done again." I don't want to pay more taxes, but somehow the mess we're in has to be fixed. And no, that doesn't mean I have full faith in the path we're now on. But I'd have the same doubts about any other way to do it. It's a tough situation, and no answer that guarantees success.

It's been 40 years since I had any real faith in the system or any politician... On that note, it's not like me to get into politics at forums, so I'm getting out of it.

The Gulf Coast is our back yard. After MS and FL decided to ride the coat tails of the Fed tax increase, our online sales tripled in those states. We started stocking Smokies and Tobacco Shacks all along the coast. If the #!#%! FDA story hadn't turned everything into a propaganda war, we'd be in Tom Thumb and possibly Kroger stores by now. Our last meetings with them stalled after the report surfaced, prompting them to "wait and see what the FDA decides"

As each state enacted legislation that bumped cigarette prices, the traffic on I-10 steadily increased with people driving from Texas to Florida to buy cases of cigarettes and stay ahead of the law. The April "Marlboro price bump" AND the federal tax increase...AND the state taxes...AND the floor taxes which the retail outlets passed on to the end users...

When I was researching the next (yes we had two this year around a buck a piece) tax hike to hit, I found a reference this forum in the article messages. Well that is all she wrote.

Cigarette thefts have been on the uprise from what we have been hearing. I can't remember what the taxes were going to fund this time....wait now I remember...HEALTH CARE, yea right

$7.00 here in Maryland. When I was in Scotland a couple years ago they were 6 pounds, twelve of our dollars, this didn't deter me at the time.

Our recent tax increase here definetely had influence on my decision to make the switch.

agreed...cost was definitely a big factor...glad I switched when I did...perfect timing.

Have a great day!
