History of e-cigs

Does anyone have info about how long e-cigs have been on the market? Where they were developed? Who first marketed them? Approximately how many users world wide? etc.

The news is full of "experts" claiming that no definitive study has been done which establishes whether or not inhaling nicotine is harmless. It seem that if enough people have been using e-cigs for a long time with no reports of negative effects, then there is pretty strong evidence that inhaling nicotine is no more harmful than chewing the gum or wearing the patch. This would certainly not be a controlled scientific experiment, but it would be strong observational evidence, which cannot be ignored no matter how much the "experts" wish to do so.

The main question for me is, "Can one overdose on the nicotine in an e-cig?" How much nocotine is absorbed from the vapor AND from the small droplets that sneak out of the orifice on a fresh and/or overloaded cartridge?

Comments on the history or the relative safety?
