I made my first microcoil yesterday, used a small piece of a round cotton makeup pad. I'm getting tons of vapor, but not much flavor. Does that mean I used too much cotton?

And how do you know when the wick needs to be changed out?

You can see it burnt underneath the coil. It's much more visible than simple silica

I started with cotton yarn, then hemp, then bamboo, back to cotton yarn then to bunny balls (all of them boiled 3 times). Went back to Silica, then to bunny balls - last week got some rolled cotton from CVS - that was a disaster......nasty taste - great vapor. It is sterilized pure cotton - am thinking this has some additive to it when it was sterilized. Havent made any BB wicks yet - so am using pre made kanger coils - silica had NO TASTE AT ALL..................gonna have to make some BB wicks tonite...................

Anyone have a pic of a kanger micro coil + cotton rebuild? I'd like to see it....If not I will check the youtubes tomorrow when I get up.

bear with me this was just for photos on a spare protank so i diddent really try super hard to make it perfect but i wrap the coil on a mini screwdriver like so wrap.jpg then i use the screwdriver to hold the coil in place as i trap the wires, then i check my ohms then i thread the cotton through the coil and leave just enough length to wrap around the cup so it fills the little reservoir Coil.jpg (yeah yeah i was a little short i was in a hurry and had nieces and nephews everywhere wondering what uncle was doing)

then i pre moisten the cotton Coil2.jpg put it all together with a full tank and vape away no gurgles no flooding and no burning good luck and happy vaping

Im pretty sure that exposing the bacteria to a burning hot coil will do the trick well I hope it does because I never bothered boiling and soaking the cotton I've used in the past that being said I've gone off cotton of late find that it gunks up stupidly quick and causes my protanks to flood meaning I have to change it more then I can be bothered with will admit flavour is simply the best I've ever tried but in my experience it doesn't last long after the wick starts charring and gunking

The coil gets hot enough to vaporize the liquid, but that doesnt mean it would kill the bacteria. IF there was bacteria present in the cotton it stands to reason that it would travel with the vapor into your mouth, throat and lungs.

On the other hand, since I have boiled about 15 feet of cotton yarn to use for wick, the taste is MUCH better than it was before I boiled it. Basically, just boil it for the flavor and if it kills bacteria, awesome. If it doesnt, well we are all just a huge study on the long term effects of inhaling vaporized flavorings, extracts, pg and vg anyways.

Do you fuse the coil together? that's the only thing that's not working for me...

Cotton is incredible. I definitely recommend the sterile rolled cotton that you may find in your local CVS / Rite Aid first aid section, NOT in the beauty section. The sterile stuff will save you from the cottony taste from the processing that normal cotton balls go through. Awesome thing is that it's around $6 for a roll that will last you a lifetime, even if you re-wick daily, which I am a fan of with cotton since it is so easy and keeps your coils gunk-free. Remove old cotton wick, dry burn a couple of times to clean the coil, and then thread in a new wick.

The flavor is off the chain.

I second all of this, especially the one about flavor. I used only silica on my RDAs before, and had very few problems. When I tried wicking with the practically zero-cost cotton (thanks to the discovery/invention of microcoils by super_x_drifter, I have to stress), at first I thought my DIY juices had become better. I thought, "whoa, never knew blueberry juice could taste this good" and went on to check what I changed in the recipe. Then I realized that it was the cotton wick that made the difference.

I still use both cotton and silica. I use my unflavored juice on silica and the flavored ones on cotton.

Susaz, after you roll your microcoil, before taking it out of the nail, drillbit, or syringe, grab a pair of tweezers and "pinch" the coils together to tighten them up. then do the same when you put them on your mod, make them glow then while they are hot (DO NOT PRESS FIRE BUTTON) squeeze them together again with the tweezers.

Just watch this video Susaz, 7:30 into video

Yes, that's what I do, first I mount it with the drillbit still on, once mounted and firmly tightened (iGo L, no post holes), remove the drillbit squeeze them together (7 to 10 turns of 28 ga Kanthal for 1.8 ohms, using Phil Busardo's calc) and fire them up several times to make sure it glows evenly with no hot legs, then I thread the gauze.
Guys, STERILE gauze has ZERO flavor.

I too have done this with my Protank. The thing I didn't do is leave the cotton tails in the well. I cut them down just like the silica, and there's been no leaking, gurgling or burning and I'm using it with Boba's Bounty. I have to say, cotton has really saved me from overlooking clearomizers in general. Not once have I bought a clearomizer and said "man this thing is great". Nope, but cotton has saved the day. Rocking a micro-coil at 1.5 ohms. Getting full, robust flavor. One of the best vapes around, IMO.

What gauge wire are you using for your micro-coils?

I tried to make one with the 32g I have on hand and the resistance was too high to be usable.

I have mad working ones with 32 awg had trouble getting the resistance high enough with 28 to work on my mvp and still fit in the protank without creating a short but im new to this im thinking about grabing 30 and trying my luck might get me in a better range
