I'm so fed up with the government's performance and response to the electronic cigarette.

What we know:
Smoking is bad

What we see:
"smoke"

We conclude:
Anything that looks like smoke is smoke and so it's bad.

The anti smoking lobby has done a very effective job of training the United States, and the world to point to smoke and think "bad." Smokers don't have rights any more, and we've been singing that song without a leg to stand on for a long time now.

If what I believe about the electronic cigarette is true:
1. There are no carcinogens in the liquid or the vapor
2. The vapor does not contain nicotine
3. The devices are not being marketed to children, and are otherwise unavailable to people under 18
4. The devices are not recommended as a smoking cessation device, rather, a healthy replacement for nicotine delivery.
5. The devices are not recommended to "non smokers."

If this is true (and I bet there's more) then what's the hassle?

My paranoid mind says that if people stop smoking, or don't pay into the taxable tobacco system then the revenue loss will be astronomical. So the government view the electronic cigarette as a threat the the revenue stream? that may be true, but it just sounds so far fetched.

But I have to wonder, what aren't there already disposable Marlboros in a box of 5? Seems like old PM could get into this and sell the crap out of "healthy" electronic cigarettes? Is it possible that they are also against us?

Also seems completely far fetched to me. If there's a way to exploit a product, and potentially clear it for sale and production in the USA, then the tobacco companies should be all over it, backing us up. But where are they?

It seems to me that the real issue is ignorance.
People see "smoke" and they respond negatively -- like a couple in a taqueria last night who shoved me and said "grow up, there's no smoking in here buddy!" and by the time I was done explaining what it was they wanted to buy one!

So the best thing to do, in my loud mouthed opinion, is to raise your PV up, and blow out a beautiful plume of steam and then unscrew it, pull off the cart, and smile. Take the time to explain what it is, how it works, where you got it, and assure people that they have nothing to fear.

Every single time I do this, people hug me, wish me luck, and scramble for a pen to write down the web sites I suggest they come to in order to get one.

Behind every anti-electronic cigarette voice is a person who is desperate for a cigarette, or terrified that the money they make from their anti-smoking stance is going to dry up.

Educate, inform, explain, and share the love.

Did you even watch the video? It seemed to be a fairly impartial video. It was said that the FDA couldn't prove that the e-cigs were safe when they could have said they couldn't prove they weren't safe. Other than that it wasn't that bad.

I did. Yes.

But I just got mad and vented. I've been getting bashed a lot lately.

Sorry.

As long as the nicotine is derived from tobacco, there will be some trace amounts of carcinogens, as the FDA has found and sound proudly announced. What was not mentioned was that there were only a handful of carcinogens found, while cigarettes have a ton of them. What was also not mentioned was that these same carcinogens are also found in the common smoking cessation devices as well, and in comparible amounts as found by the FDA in the electronic cigarette. What was also not mentioned was that these carcinogens, in these amounts, are pretty much harmless. What was also not mentioned was that these carcinogens were NOT detected in any of the vapor, only in the liquid itself.

The vapor most certainly does contain nicotine, although I am assuming you really meant the exhaled vapor. It is likely that there is nicotine in the exhaled vapor, but that is not clear yet as far as I know. But even if there was, the amount would probably be negligible to the point of being almost completely and totally harmless. Nicotine, after all, is not a carcinogen, and has actually been documented to have a number of beneficial applications for human health and well being.

The whole marketing to children thing is the most full of crap thing I've ever heard on my 43 years on this earth, rivaled only by the idea that cutting down the rainforests is going to work out just fine and dandy in the long run.
