I'd start with 30 or 28 gauge.

Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators

a 28 gauge (kanthal) 1 ohm on 2 to 3mm diameter bit

You said you were new to building, then later you said you were new, which leaves the question open; are you new to vaping as well or do you already have some experience vaping like 3 months to a year and if so what gear have you been using so far.

It is best to start of with a regulated mod when you first start wrapping your own coils;
that way you can adjust the mod to the coil;
later when you get the coil right working at 3.7 volts, you add the second coil, and at that point if the combined ohms is too low for your regulated mod, only then do you need the mech.

I have had a vtr and a vamo all with clearomisers, iClears, Mini Nautilus, nothing fancy, vaper production pretty poor. Rebuilding seems interesting so I'd like to get into that

Edit: been vaping for around 6 months

So you have had a vtr and vamo; does that mean you no longer have them?

If you do still have them, they are usefull for your first coil builds. You build single coil; once you get the single coil right, then you can add the second coil, and at that point you may need to use the mech or higher powered regulated mod.

not a bad suggestion - plus, when you start building its hard to make 2 identical coils (it was for me anyway), so getting your wrapping technique down with single coil builds is defiantly less frustrating.

Still have them, not a bad shout, its my birthday on the 14th (22) so I will probably be getting the ar mod 1.5 with a mutation but i can practise building the coils on the vamo until I get the hang of it

Seriously, check out the 50+w VW mods. Its a bit bigger than the AR mod (and the AR is a sexy mod) but it will be a bit quite a bit safer, and built for subohming... you'd be happy with it while you learn and beyond. many that used to use mechs are now using the iPV2s (70w) or 3 or Segelli 100w mod. They let you build down around .2ohms which should be plenty - most recommend building higher as you can put more wattage to it getting it hotter quicker - the need for super sub ohm is negated buy the boost chips they put in them.You could probably find the iPV2 on eBay pretty cheap as people will be upgrading to the 3 or other higher wattage mods as they come out.

Whatever you decide to do, be safe!

Thanks Mate I was so tempted to buy the AR it looks so damn good, I'm really torn between the AR or the Jester from 3rd degree vapes, only 500 being made and they look pretty good, all copper as well, does all copper make that much of a difference in terms of the vape?

If you are new to mech mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US. I have no links for batteries in the UK. Sorry!

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics
