Hopefully Simple Question

Hey Gang, My wife and I have both started vaping. I'm more into it and have drastically cut my dependance on "analogs" by over 75% whereas, she's still going at it with them. Mainly for the fact that whenever she vapes on her simple eGo-T with a CE5, regardless of the juice mix (tried 60/40, 50/50, and 20/80) she starts coughing and it ruins the experience for her, even if the juice is the blend she wanted or not. Anyone have any suggestions or similar experience?

There are several factors. First, the nicotine level can affect the throat hit. A higher nicotine level will create a harsher throat hit, and thus creating a greater chance of coughing. Second, based on my experience, I believe PG is more potent than VG when it comes to throat hit. So a higher PG level will cause a higher chance of her coughing. Last but not least, the device and the ohm/voltage level can affect how much of a throat hit she gets. The lower the ohm (example, .8 ohms) will produce more vapor and probably more throat hit.

So,

What nicotine level is she using?
What is the PG/VG ratio she uses often and the one that makes her cough the most?
What is the ohm level and voltage level (if it applies)?

I will politely disagree with the allergy thing. It seems to me an allergy is going to show up as adverse effects over a period of time. Not an immediate reaction to inhaling a boiling cloud of pg/vg.

I think everyone coughs on the first couple of hits. ( I know I did). I always suggest a different way of inhaling the vape, not like a hard hit on an analog, but a slow gradual hit, absorb the nicotine through your mouth and nostrils. Taste the flavor, enjoy the smooth warm vape.

Started with 18mg nicotine with a 60/40 mix, kept the nicotine level and tried a 50/50 mix still the same coughing issues. She also felt that the nicotine from the 18mg wasn't strong enough for when she would vape for a majority of the day, she said she didn't feel that the nicotine was even there after vaping on and off all day. Went to 24mg nicotine with a 20/80 mix and she still gets the same cough when she starts to vape. As far as the ohm and voltage levels, she's just using an eGo-T with a standard CE5 clearo, nothing fancy.

@ jclifford I've suggested that to her as well and she tried taking slower inhales and also not taking the as deep as if it were an analog, still coughed. I know when I first started vaping with those disposables available at any corner gas station, I coughed cuz they tasted like something I'd scrape off my shoe if I stepped in it, but onces I got a decent set-up, haven't had an issue with coughing.

Jclifford is correct about the allergy statement, and he reminded me of my first vape a long time ago. I used to cough occasionally the first time I vaped, and it is something you have to get used to, especially if your wife wants to stick with the current nicotine level. Tell her to man up! The coughing will subside in a short amount of time.

Yup 3 of my friends have the same symptoms. My hypothesis was that they had an allergy to PG.

But I'm far from being a doctor.

Didn't you play one on TV once? I could of sworn I seen you on an episode of different strokes where Arnold got hit by the Gooch!

She might try really increasing her water intake. I was listening to program the other night where it was suggested that what might be taken for a sensitivity to pg, could be an irritation due to dehydration (it's supposedly more dehydrating than vg). It was just a hypothesis.

I hate water but I was just getting ready to say this. I was so used to being croupy and stuff when smoking that when I stopped or even cut back it was almost like inhaling sand. I use very low nic and at least 80 vg and still cough that horrible dry cough if I don't hydrate. I guess the tar in my lungs and throat was a little more comfortable from that aspect, but certainly not worth continuing the stinkies. Coughing a few times a day when I don't have water around certainly beats wheezing every morning and night in bed. :)

There's something about the way she's inhaling, I think. I agree that an allergy shows up after a little bit, not right away. I thought I was PG sensitive when I first started, so I got 50/50 and 100% VG. I still coughed at the start, but after a few days the only time I ever coughed was first thing in the morning. Now I'm vaping 70/30 PG and not having any harshness issues.

It takes a while to get used to inhaling the vapor--it's heavier and thicker than smoke. I used to have to take really tiny inhales at first and slowly work my way into a full inhale. Now I only take shallow inhales; just enough to get it to the back of my throat, where I can exhale through my nose. But I CAN inhale deeply if I want to get the sensation like smoking.

She should remind herself (as I did), that it took some time to stop coughing when I first started smoking...it's the same with vaping. Good luck--I hope she stick through it. My BF refuses to after several attempts and has now asked me not to ask him anymore. Kind of sad.

And don't forget about burning holes into clothing and furniture. When I used to smoke analogs back then, this one time I ashed my analog out of my car window and the cherry (burning part) broke off from the tip and landed on my car seat without my knowledge. The cherry piece burned a hole through my limited edition bomber jacket and my car seat. This was just one incident with analogs and there were many more... but this one was the most memorable as I was in a fitting rage that day.

I'll definitely suggest to her about keeping well hydrated and perhaps adjusting how she inhales, hopefully things will come around for her. I enjoy vaping and as I mentioned, I'm almost 100% off analogs atm, still have the actual cravings for them. What my problem is, is finding a good tasting menthol tobacco juice that doesn't taste "fake" Current one I'm using is NET Menthol Ice from Goodejuice but it still seems lacking.

@ degnr8 I always test her gear before she uses it, just to make sure everything is right and proper and we both smoke the same juices and I've never once experienced coughing from the first vape. We've even swapped setups, I've let her vape on my Kanger Evod and my Vivi Nova and she still experienced the coughing.
