Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here!:)

I'll start with a few questions first.

1. Do you have an ohm reader or DMM to measure your builds?
2. What batteries are you using (brand/mah/amp limitation)?
3. Have you read up on battery safety, ohms law and amp limitations?

As Susan said, there are a lot of things you need to make and ensure the safety of a coil build on your Tobh.

If you have everything you need, and understand the inherent safety concerns about building, you need to do more research and understand how wire gauge, coil diameter, and the number of wraps you do effect the resistance of your coil. Once you understand that, you also need to research different kind of builds and which one is the best fit for you.

A good tool to play around with all of these factors without wasting wire, cotton, or endangering yourself is Steam Engine | free vaping calculators and click on the paper clip icon. There is also a battery drain calculator on that site, along with several other awesome tools.

Once you have a thorough grasp on all of these concepts you will be well on your way. Also, 'basic' is in the eye of the beholder. :p

To add to what Susan and Cullin have offered up do yourself a huge favor and spend a few hours/days simply reading through the relevant forums here on ECF.
Rebuildable Atomizer Systems
Coil Builds

READ The Stickies!

Not a quick and easy approach perhaps but ultimately a sane approach.
You'll learn what you need as well as gain enough understanding of coil building to know what questions to ask that are meaningful to you.

Save the youtube "research" until after you've done your due diligence reading the above mentioned forums. Have fun with it (-:

I would also like to add that the coil building apps (steamengine and the like) are NOT a replacement for an ohm meter! Just because some mathematical equation says that your build should be good does not mean that the ACTUAL build is good... those apps do not account for human error such as a short...

You have been warned...

:thumb: This!

The two most important things to know about building coils are:

  • Knowing the amp limit (continuous discharge rate) of your battery. List of battery amp limits

  • Knowing the amp load your coil will pull from your battery. Found by measuring your coil with a meter and using an Ohm's Law calculator.

Hi, recommend you do is watch several you tube videos on different types of coil builds. You can start by looking on you tube on how to build a micro coil.look at the supplies they use, watch their steps one by one, pay attention to the size of wire used and how many wraps. Once you are confident you need to start learning ohms law and be able to work the formula. If you don't like math they have some amazing apps to do it for you. One of my favorite apps is simply called ohms law. You plug in the numbers and it does the rest. So you know how many amps your build is pushing and you won't be pushing your battery past it's limitations. Very important. Basic items you will need is either a app like I described above or the ability to work the formula yourself, you will also need a ohm reader, kanthal wire which gauge you want (I personally perfer 28 gauge) you will need wicking media, either or cotton, stainless steel mesh, silica, rayon, which ever you perfer. I recommend starting with organic cotton. You will need wire clippers and I like using a small tool to wrap my coil on, like a small tiny screw driver tip. That works great for me. I also use a torch with butane to heat and compress my coils for micro coils.you might want some tweezers and hemostats. That's a very good start. As far as wrapping a coil it depends what result your after.a example would be when I make a micro coil I use a 6 wrap and compress with tweezers then torch, I cool with water to temper the coil and I will get a consistent .8 coil. It's going to depend on your techniques, how tightly you wrap, your coil diameters, your coil wire gauge ect. Practice makes perfect. I suggest starting with the you tube videos and going from there. Hope this is helpful and best wishes.

I'm going to add my :2c: before calling it a night.

Mechs, building, batts, chargers, meters, all this should be researched, thoroughly investigated, and re-read and studied before ever assembling a shopping list. Little knowledge in hand can be the last information ever learned.

It's like this, does someone step into the ring with Bruce Lee or Cassius Marcellus Clay, without first learning to fight and defend?? Does one jump on a rocket powered motorcycle and try to set a new land speed 2 wheel record before learning to ride a bicycle. or what makes the wheels go round??

All the information is on the ecf, many, many build threads, sub forums, everything you need to know is here, go forth and learn. Let me ask you this, have you been able to fill a protank and vape it on a ego batt without it flooding or getting dry hits????

Where are you on your vape journey?? What is you current gear being used and what watts do you vape at? What is you nic level??,
VG %?? what are the ohms of your current atomizer that you are using??? How many amps does it draw???

If you can't answer everyone of those quires, well, you shouldn't even attempt to put a battery into you King pipebombMod, let alone wrap a wire around a drill bit.

Hey, I'm not being an azz, well, maybe a little, my cats say it's time for bed, and am a bit tired:D but if I didn't truly care about all who vape, and this community, frankly I wouldn't bother. that said,

Vape long and Prosper.!!!!

Yes, very true. I wrote my response under the assumption that the items I mentioned were to come after Susan's questions which would hopefully prompt the investment in an ohm reader. Not a good assumption to make, my bad!

To be fair, Cullin, I wasn't calling you out or dinging you... was just adding to your post.
Sorry, I should have been more clear myself... :)

Be a good friend and tell him to put the brakes on. He's putting the cart ahead of the horse.

I just want to echo all the great advise before me... OP - educate yourself before you hurt yourself or someone else.

i told him to lurk the forum and get advice from other people before we actually sit down and build one.

It all sounds rather involved, do you all enjoy building mods? I've been interested in getting into the whole thing but worry that the investment would be a waste if it ends up being a pain in the ..... I do love to tinker though, i've been known to take electronics apart just for fun.

i love it, and i used to do the same thing with electronics when i was younger, now instead of destroying electronics i build coils.
