I was wondering how everyone else carries there spare batteries. I travel quite a bit, so I always have a few charged up and ready to go. I was looking at the Volta by Maxpedition....I have a couple of there pouches to carry my vaping stuff, external hard drives, chargers, etc... but I don't think the Volta will hold a 18650 battery. I would love to hear some other ideas.

I carry a Maxpedition Micro pocket organizer with me everyday. I keep 3 18650's and a bottle of juice in the elastic loops. I keep some cotton wick, tweezers, and a small screwdriver in the little pockets.It's enough to get me through a day at work or more, but for a longer trip I would probably go for something larger.
Before I got my battery case I kept my batteries in empty twist top amber pill bottles.

A plastic battery case like this would be ideal, I have a few, they keep the batteries from accidentally making a complete circuit with things like keys, etc.
Any place that sells removable Li-On batteries carries universal plastic cases - or they should. Don't fiddle with trying to get different sizes to fit each battery dimension. A single large case will fit either two 18650 or 18490/18500 or four 18350 or 16340. Basic, cheap and flexible.
I keep my batteries in an Efest plastic case which I can carry around in my pocket very easily without worrying about a short or anything. Plus, its good to have when you need to switch out batteries in a short amount of time instead of fumbling around in your pockets. Also, I have found that wearing cargos can help with the extra space when you need to carry other equipment too.
