Simple. Keep it in your shirt pock, bend over to pick something up from off the asphault - the cap comes right off when it hits the pavement.
It is difficult, but not impossible. The cap is very brittle. I often heat the battery tube with a lighter to loosen up the adhesive holding the cap in place and use a small knife blade and/or a tiny screwdriver to pry it off. If you heat the tube too much, the ash cap will start melting.
Well...I have a 510 and it's grey. I assume it's an "ash cap". Isn't it???
(I need to pull it off to see if I can modify it/replace it somehow)

I inserted a small flat tip screwdriver in the two slots between the ash cap and tube. Twist the screwdriver gently until the glue breaks loose and remove cap....the ash cap on the battery without tearing it to pieces?
My 510 manual does not have a slot. My other batts have slots which sometimes chiped when I tried screw driver method.
Oops, sorry! I have 4 auto bats and 4 manual bats that all have slots so it looked like a standard to me.
Without slots, I guess it would have to be the heat and knife method.
I have a pug puppy who can remove an ash cap from any battery in about 3 seconds flat. He is obsessed with them.
