Hi everyone,

I was vaping while watching movie with my nautilus mini. It has a replacement tank on it so its capacity is even less than the original 2ml. I didnt notice the juice was running out. I realised after i get a weird taste in my mouth. I was using this coil for around 4days. I refilled it and I guess it tastes fine, but i was concerned about the health issues of using burned coil so I wanted to ask.

1- How do you understand you need to change the coil?
2- Incase if you forget to add juice and get a burned taste in your mouth, does that means the coil is done and you shouldnt use it anymore?

BTW I think its an organic cotton one (Im not really sure because Im still using the coil came with the tank and it has big holes on it)

Thank you :)

No that doesn't mean you need to change it. That just means your wick got dry and you were agitating (not quite fully burning the cotton but almost) the cotton. If you continued to vape with that nasty flavor, you would burn the cotton and notice a definite change in flavor when you refill. Could usually last from 5 days to a few weeks depending on how much you vape and the PG/VG content of your juice. You will definitely notice when you need to change a coil: Everything you live about Vaping will be gone (flavor, vapor production, etc.).

Agreed. One dry hit does not mean you need a new coil. However, I would try to avoid dry hits because they are nasty and probably not good for you. If you refill the tank and it tastes and hits fine, than its good. You will definitely notice when you need to replace.

The answer to the original question is you know the coil is done when the resistance level significantly increases. For example, if you're using a 1.6ohm coil and you look down and notice that it's now reading as a 1.9ohm coil then it's pretty well worn out. An increase of .3 or more ohms is a good sign that it's time to replace the coil.

Alternatively, and far more commonly, the wicks get gunked up with unvaporized residue from your liquids. Coloring as well as some additives for flavor don't vaporize well and instead tend to cook themselves into the wicks. You'll start getting nasty tasting hits and/or dry hits. The darker and thicker the liquid the faster the wicks will get gunked up and start tasting bad. Depending on the type of coil and wick you may be able to clean it or rewick the coil and continue to use the coil. Otherwise it's time to throw it away.

The third issue, and what you ran into here is called a dry hit, where not enough liquid was in the wick when you fired it. Depending on the material and how long you fired the mod this is usually fixed by simply adding liquid and saturating the wick. However, if the wick is particularly dry and depending on the wicking material, particularly with cotton, you can burn the wick in which case the only way to fix it is to either replace the wick or replace the coil.

Whenever you install a new wick always add a few drops of liquid directly to the wick and coil. Then once it's installed take a few puffs without firing the mod to help the flow of juice through the wick. Usually after that it's best to let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before using it, just to make sure everything is nice and wet and well primed.
