How does a really good DIY recipe compare to a premium brand juice?

Your satisfaction with DIY will depend on your priorities, how much patience and willingness to learn you bring, and the amount of time, effort, and resources you are willing to spend. Can you make good juice coming out of the gate? Yes, if you start slowly and pay attention. Will everything you make knock your socks off? Probably not. Is it worth the trouble? You will have to try it to find out.

Definitely agree. It's somewhat like cooking -- anyone can throw some Hamburger Helper together and make something edible. To take that same Hamburger Helper and create something really unique and delicious, that takes more effort, time, and money, and LOTS of patience to be able to do it again and again until you get it just right, *and then* be able to do it over and over again, the very same way. ejuice is no different. There's a learning curve that consists in large part in knowing what flavors from which flavor vendors taste best to you, and how best to combine them, but that just takes a bit of time, and willingness to experiment and play; the flavors themselves are not terribly expensive, nor are the other ingredients. Mainly patience, time, and a lot of bottles are the necessary requirements -- and willingness to "kill your babies" when they turn out awful. :D Because some invariably do. Others will start out, eh, so-so, but you can tinker with them -- for that reason it's good to start with lower percentages of flavors than you think you need, so you can add this, that, and the other thing, till you get it just right. Some of those "other things" may not be obvious -- like sweetener, or "Smooth," or "Bitter Wizard," or acetyl pyrazine, etc. I've found that adding sweetener turns many a so-so flavor into something outstanding -- even with pre-mixed ejuice!

Well just as an example, I used my extremely basic recipe for lemon raspberry and whipped up a batch, let a few guys at work try it out and they were blown away. I don't know if I just got lucky with this one but it literally makes your mouth water :) They are already requesting flavors from me (although I am limited with only 11 flavorings to start), but hopefully this weekend I can start mixing some more stuff up, currently I am all filled up so it is hard to get a sense for the flavors when I can't smell anything.

Ain't that an awesome feeling? Especially when they look at you like you performed some type of magic! But, in some respects it is a magical thing when it turns out brilliantly -- even if it's a simple recipe.

Yah, I am glad I picked it for my first DIY recipe, it didn't turn out like I was expecting. Was supposed to be a Raspberry Lemonade, but it is missing the sour to taste like lemonade, only had to tweak it once to get the raspberry and lemon balanced better and I did a 30ml bottle of it up tonight to have for a bit. Next one to work on is a good watermelon recipe.
