i know there healthier than cigarettes but how healthy is it that water vapor is going into your lungs? my cousin asked me this and all i could say is it's better than 4000 chemicals going into your lungs. he was like "isn't there a chance that you'll get pneumonia from the water vapor going into your lungs?" and i didn't know how to answer that question. so how healthy are e-cigs?

Tell your cousin that if he's worried about breathing in water vapor, he'd better start taking cold showers from now on, and stay away from the kitchen when water is boiling. And he probably shouldn't travel to any tropical locale where the humidity is over 60%... (Of course, you could mention that vaping doesn't involve inhaling any appreciable water vapor, but that might confuse him... :))

First of all knowing what causes pneumonia would be a key. It is caused by bacteria in the lungs.

Pneumonia: Causes - MayoClinic.com

Pneumonia has many possible causes. The most common are bacteria and viruses in the air we breathe. Your body usually prevents these germs from infecting your lungs. But sometimes these germs can overpower your immune system, even if your health is generally good.

It symptoms are fluid in the lungs.

You have the same chance of contracting pneumonia as you do breathing air.. well maybe slightly less since the air is heated first maybe killing the bacteria that could cause pneumonia.

How healthy? Doubt they are healthy at all. Diet coke isn't healthy. That cupcake my wife made me last night with extra icing wasn't. Coffee isn't healthy. The pineapple ham swiss and teriyaki burger I had today definitely wasn't healthy. 100 more reps at the gym... healthy.

"isn't there a chance that you'll get pneumonia from the water vapor going into your lungs?"

Tell that to my grandma :D
Whenever I had a bad cold, she would make me inhale hot water vapor with chamomile, over a bowl. It helped, too :)

Bluecat has already provided the link about what causes pneumonia. Water vapor is definitely not one of the causes.
Neither is vaping :)

edit:
oh, grandma's recipe for alleviating colds is still recommended today:
Cold, Common - Treatment - NHS Choices
(the NHS is the National Health Service in the UK)

Take a cigarette, remove all the chemicals and carcinogens that get burnt and inhaled, leaving only nicotine, a stimulant much like caffeine, which has been shown to help with some maladies like Alzheimers. Add propylene glycol, used as an anti-bacterial inhalant in hospitals, and some vegetable glycerine. Pretty benign compared to a cigarette.

Not only is vaping less risky than smoking, but in my case, it has allowed my blood oxygen absorption to return from dangerously low levels to that of a non-smoker in a matter of three months. When I get a cold, it lasts for a couple days, much like during my college days. As a smoker, colds routinely turned into bronchitis and an inflamed lung, taking weeks and steroid treatments to overcome.

You don't even need to inhale the vapor, just puff it like a cigar, to get the nicotine. I think it is radically healthier.

well said, 440BB! Same experience here - no more bronchitis - YEAH!

And I just love this summary:

lets put it this way ... read through some of the amazing success stories here on ECF ... the ones where people talk about their improved health and how they feel much better since switching to the vape.

None of it is hype ... these folks are keeping it real :2cool:

i've been vaping for almost a year. my cousin asking questions just got me thinking is all.
