I've recoiled several T3 heads with 32 gauge Kanthal A1 using a 4/40 screw. I find that 4 wraps will give me around 1.8 ohms and 5 wraps gives me around 2.2+ ohms. The diameter of a 4/40 screw is much larger than the diameter of the stock coil. This is why I can't do 5 wraps like the original coil and get +/- 2 ohms like the original coil. I need to get to the hardware store and look for a smaller diameter screw so I can attempt to do 5 wraps and keep the ohms at 2 or less.

I'm using silica wick which I'm not completely satisfied with. I did try the cheesecloth once and it had a lot of cotton taste. I'll have to try this again and see how long that taste is going to last.

I use scissors. These allow me to easily cut the excess wire off once the base is reassembled.

I did try the cheesecloth once and it had a lot of cotton taste. I'll have to try this again and see how long that taste is going to last.

I re-wick everything I vape with cheesecloth—ProTanks, T3s, Penelope, Ithaka, etc.—and there is one simple secret to eliminating the "cotton-y" taste: after building your coil on the cheesecloth wick, generously drip some juice directly on the wick, then re-assemble the atty and fill the tank. Then set it aside and do not fire it for at LEAST half an hour; I usually wait a full hour for the best results. This gives the cheesecloth wick a chance to get thoroughly saturated, and not only will it not burn or scorch, there will be no cotton taste at all ... the wick becomes completely flavor-transparent, and you'll get the best, purest taste you can get from a non-mesh coil setup. This long soak time is especially critical for VG heavy juices, but it is important for all juices. You may think that letting a wick soak for an hour is excessively long (I did!), but it is really necessary if you want the best taste. This is my experience over the past six months or so of rebuilding my own coils ... YMMV.

I figured i would try this method on my protank coils while i'm waiting for my Vamo and RSST to come through the mail this week :D I didn't have any kanthal wire so i just cleaned up the stock coils and dry burned them after removing the silica (the used ones i had anyways, the only new ones i had were 2.5 ohm and i much prefer the 1.8 ohm evod head). The first couple that i built had a very nasty burnt taste that didn't go away at all. I finally boiled a section of cheesecloth for 30 minutes and started again tonight. I used a configuration of 34 top strands and 34 flavor wick strands. I also saturated the wick with e juice (100% VG) before reassembling it and let the tank sit for about an hour, per Scott's instructions.

The first few vapes i had off of this new coil were pretty terrible, but now the more i vape, the better the flavor is getting better each go around!

received some t3's I got on classies and was told ahead of time heads may have to be redone(she sent new coils too but why waste them LOL)so I figured what the heck. I had been recoiling my stardusts prior to getting these. checked the t3 coils on ohms meter and yep they were shot. made some new coils(I do 5/6 wrap on toothpick, I tried the 4/40 screw method and it sucked LOL) heated my wire, wrapped my coil, rebuilt the head. inserted the cheesecloth, as told here,30/30 and omg. this is amazing! mikey my man u r a genius.

Hey ingerri

What is the resistance you get with 5 coils and 6 coils around a toothpick? Are you using 32ga Kanthal? I'm doing the 4/40 screw method and the coils come out beautiful but I can only do 4 wraps or the resistance goes over 2 ohms. Still need to get ahold of a smaller diameter screw.

I also tried the smaller screw, cant seem to keep wire in the threads LOL, yes 32kanthal 6on top/5on bottom. then I can squish it closer together before taking it off toothpick. I get between 2.2 and 2.4. it fits perfectly in space provided :)

just tried this, idk, kinda harsh on the throat and has a weird after taste, no burn taste, just a weird taste. just just keep using the one I rewicked and see if anything changes.

just a hard time finding anything I like, hated cotton balls as well. hope the ss mesh in a winner, if not silica is next.

I'm at day 93 smoke free at this point and time. I've been rebuilding coils using all different cotton products. Cotton balls, cotton yarn, cotton cheesecloth, and I just bought cotton butchers twine today.
For the last 30 days I've used cheesecloth in my MT3's. I don't separate the threads, I just roll it up to 3mm wick size. It's a bit sloppy looking as for the cotton threads oriented in the opposite direction of the horizontal way a wick is,,, but,,,, it worked fine every time.
I however hold a paper clip sized piece of wire along side the wick as I wrap the 32ga. kenthal wire around both the wick and wire,( 5 wire loops to top, 4 wire loops at the bottom of the coil ( also known as a 5/4 coil wrap) Leave the end wire leads long enough to go through the coil/wick chasey. Then, make sure to have slight spaces between the coiled wire, ((COIL)), and then pull the paper clip wire out. Slide through coil/wick chasey and complete the positive and negative connections with the rubber grommet and metal positive post. ( Many videos on YouTube showing coil rebuilding this way.)
NOTE: You will need a mod that reads ohm,s . This will insure no shorts in the coil, as well as telling you how many ohm,s the coil is. ( $35.00 COMPLETE VAMO SET UP FROM VAPOR BREAK,,, VAMO, BATTERIES AND CHARGER. )
NOW
Here is my experience using cotton. After 30 or so days of cotton cheesecloth wicks ,,,,and getting great vapor clouds and plenty of taste from my home mixed VG ( Glycerine ) e-juice, I started getting an annoying cough. As though something could not be cleared from my throat so easily. ( Nothing compared to my 3 pack a day BARKING COUGH) Anyway, I switched back to a new stock MT3. Within a few hours of vaping , my annoying slight hack disappeared. I will have to experiment with cotton butchers twine I purchased today. This twine is light brownish in color and very much resembles the twist look of a silica wick. I boiled 5ft of it for 15 minutes, rinsed with filtered water and boiled it again for 10-15 minutes. Patted dry with paper towels and now letting it completely dry between paper towels.
i will post pictures some time soon showing the steps of easy coil rebuilding. Unless your eye sight is great, you will want a free standing magnifying glass. Some have lights and mount to a desk (or) as mine is in the fashion of a head band. It works great when positioning the spaces between kenthal wire coil turns.
To all my unknown friends,,, VAPE- ON
