I am new to this vaping and only bought my first e-cig a few months ago, an intellcig.
Only found in the last few days that there was such a thing as e-liquid, had just being buying the cartridges from intellcig. Purchased 150 menthol cartridges just before finding out.

Just ordered 5ml of Dekang Mint and 5ml of Dekang apple to get me started on trying to refill cartridges.

I'm reasonably happy with the vapour so far but I suppose I have nothing to compare against.
When and why do people decide to switch to something a bit more advanced?

And I know it has probably being answered before but is an intellicig a 501, 901, 401 or some other number?

It's up to you.

Intellicig is similar for M402 or M401 but Intellicig may use a modified pointy atomizer bridge so they can sell harder to refill & carry foil covered cartridges instead of ones with silicone plugs. If so, their atomizer is probably needed for their carts, and a normal M401 atomizer needed for M401 carts.

I started with M402 and M401, spent a lot of money (a LOT - spare batteries and PCC, then switched to M401 size and needed more spare batteries and a new PCC). I only ever used ONE cart though. I restuffed it with blue foam and would just keep it damp with juice and wash it once it a while.

However - within 3 weeks I was shopping for something better and and by the end of the first month I was vaping both manual 510 / Boge cartomizers and manual KR808D-1 (Vapor4Life, and now the newer SmokelessImage type)

I still leave the M401 set up at home, with a delicate flavor and laying in a crystal ashtray. Occasionally I take a couple of drags off it. It is a pleasure to hold and does deliver good flavor. And I bought manuals so I did get decent drags off it without too much effort. The main annoyance is the teensy little juice cup recessed in the mouthpiece. Very annoying to fill, and like all cartridges it can suddenly decide to dump juice in your mouth. Sometimes I just couldn't get the cartridge stuffing and atomizer to cooperate - I remember one morning fighting with it for 20 minutes trying to get my first drag. And I got tired of cleaning atomizers. I wanted to use models that had cartomizers available, that held more juice, that kept my flavors separate w/ no atomizers to clean (except occasionally because I do use an atomizer to test juices). I also wanted a totally sealed threaded end on manual batteries (510 has that, and now SmokelessImage and Bloogplanet has that for their KR88D-1 manuals)

Oh yeah - after about 6 months of vaping, when I was dropping my nic another level, I got myself a Riva 510 from Liberty-Flights.com too (theirs are 3.7v). These are fat battery models with more than 3x the charge of an M401, more than 4x the charge of M401. Very nice w/ Boge cartomizers. Riva 510 is a popular Ego clone but the ones at Liberty-Flights.com have a bit more voltage than Ego.

But for most of my everyday vaping when out I still use manual Joye 510 (w/ Boge 3 ohm cartomizer) and Vapor4Life and SmokelessImage manuals with cartomizers from SmokelessImage, Bloogplanet or Vapor4Life. These are slim models but a bit thicker than a cigarette or Intellicig. These are about 9.2mm diameter.

You have to push up the juice cup so you can see where to drip the liquid into the stuffing. Only make it look damp. Then reposition the stuffing even with the top edge of the cart and fairly stable, and get the juice cup back down into the mouthpiece without pressing on the stuffing. Then attach cart to the atomizer. Note - while the juice cup is up, if there are fragments of foil you may want to remove those.

And if you want, you can remove the stuffing, rinse it, pat dry with paper towel, and refluff. Rinse cart and juice cup and dry those by shaking out and with a q-tip (cotton swab).

Remember to carry and unbent small paper clip and tissues with you. And be careful not to cause elqiuid to drip on the end of your battery. You can kill batteries that way when they have an open hole in the end.
