I've read that it is beneficial to rotate the cart so it is aligned with the atty element properly. Do you do this? I do not and am curious if I'm messing up somehow.
How many vapers align their cart with the atty?

I always do with 510 carts. With 901 carts I put them on at the angle that's most comfortable. No idea how you are "supposed" to align 901 carts.
Hmmm, I have never melted a cart--even at 5v. Isn't it kind of inconvenient to have to vape a whistle-tip at an angle or are they built so that isn't necessary? Truth is, I never paid any attention.
I did when I tried using 510 carts. I melted so many carts still so I went back to cartos ><
Bushmaster, yes, it's annoying to have the thing not really lined up right. An automatic battery wouldn't matter, but those almost don't exist for 510s.
I align mine but that's only because I use flat-tips and it bugs me if I doesn't line up right with my button.. lol
I align it after experiencing the multiple aforementioned problem of melting. I think it helps for that + i only take two hits consecutively to not overheat the ecig.510
I align, because I've read multiple times that you should. Never had any problems...
I do each and evey time and have never had a melted cart. By doing so, I know that the now "form-fitted" filling in my cart always fits perfectly over the shape of the atty bridge (510) every time, providing me with the same wicking effect.
I didn't pay too much attention in my early days but I do now as i find much better and full wicking, better drained carts with less flooding, and the filler last longer not taking so much of the main heat.

Sounds like you are aligning the tip to the battery, not the mouthpiece/cartridge to the atomizer. Rarely does aligning the atty properly also align the button on the battery also line up conveniently!
I usually hold my 510 with my palm over the LED, so it doesn't matter where the button is in relation to my flat tip - I use whatever finger is closest to activate the button!

I still align my atty out of habit, but over the past year I still seem to get just as much melting of the cart edges.
One nice thing about using a drip tip - you don't have to worry about lining it up, because you don't have to ever take it off. I find I'm using the drip tip more often when I'm at home!
I do it, seems to deliver the liquid better, and doesn't dry out as fast. That's my opinion.
