How Old Is grandma?
~

~

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It will blow you away.
One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events.

The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general..
The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:
' television
' penicillin
' polio shots
' frozen foods
' Xerox
' contact lenses
' Frisbees and
' the pill
There w
ere no:
' credit cards
' laser beams or
' ball-point pens
Man had not invented:
' pantyhose
' air conditioners
' dishwashers
' clothes dryers
' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and
' man hadn't yet walked on the moon
~

Your Grandfather and I got married first, .. ... ... and then lived together..
Every family had a father and a mother.
Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir".
And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir."
We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.
Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.
We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.
Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege...
We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.
Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.
Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.
Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.
~

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.
We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.
And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.
If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk
The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam....
Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.
We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.
Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.
And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.
You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . .. . but who could afford one?
Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.
In my day:
' "grass" was mowed,
' "coke" was a cold drink,
' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and
' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,
' " chip" meant a piece of wood,
' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and
' "software" wasn't even a word.
~

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.
How old do you think I am?
I bet you have this old lady in mind....you are in for a shock!
Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.
Are you ready ?????

This woman would be only 59 years old.
~

GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT....... PASS THIS ON TO THE YOUNG ONES

My grandmother I don't speak to but I can believe this. I am young but people call me an old soul (I was adopted by an older family and their kids were in their 20's when I was 3 lol) but I can't even associate with alot of the things many people my age do or talk about because I am not interested in it. Alot of the things I see today or hear about today actually make me sad. Sometimes I do wish I could have lived in another time period (minus the whole slavery thing) because it seems as if the morals then are what I teach my son now. Because that is what my adoptive mother taught me. I wish we could go back to some of the older things.

I'm only 55 years old and I remember all of that. (except maybe the radio part--that was a little before my time...)

I know what you mean :) I am not quite the age of the grandma in the story but I do remember most of the stuff(a couple of years...maybe) Life seemed so much simplier then. Maybe it was because I was a kid, or maybe because that is what it is.

Couldn't agree more. It is so sad to me that most kids these days simply don't get it...or have a clue because a lot of them are left to fend for themselves or don't have role models in their lives. If given a choice, I wouldn't want to be a kid these days. Too much peer pressure and not enough disipline. I really do think it does take a village to raise kids. I remember neighbors telling my parents when I misbehaved or when I did something nice too. It helped to expand my horizon beyond just the family dynamic. You sound very level headed 757.

I am older than the grandma in your story.

I marvel at the changes and inventions I've seen in my lifetime. I try to imagine the changes and inventions my grandchildren will experience in their lifetimes.

This life has been a fun ride for me. Hope my grandchildren will be able to say the same someday.

A farmer walked into an attorney's office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, "May I help you?"

The farmer said, "Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces."

The attorney said, "Well do you have any grounds?"

The farmer said, "Yea, I got about 140 acres." The attorney said, "No, you don't understand, do you have a case?"

The farmer said, "No, I don't have a Case, but I have a John Deere."

The attorney said, "No you don't understand, I mean do you have a grudge?"

The farmer said, "Yea I got a grudge, that's where I park my John Deere."

The attorney said, "No sir, I mean do you have a suit?"

The farmer said, "Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays."

The exasperated attorney said, "Well sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?"

The farmer said, "No sir, we both get up about 4:30."

Finally, the attorney says, "Okay, let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE?"

And the farmer says, "Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her."

No I'm not associated with an airline. I wish I was because I would fly at least once a week lol 757 is our area code lol

I still remember if I was caught doing something and the neighbors saw me. I would get popped in the head by a neighbor, fussed at THEN by the time I got home my mom already knew about it and I got in trouble again lol. I had to be home before the street lights came on. My son is probably going to "hate" me when he gets to teenage status but I refuse for him to be a statistic.

Yes, he probably will hate you when he is a teenager. That lets you know you are doing it right! But, he will love you for it when he grows up to be a successful young man!

My Grandmother bless her soul was an amazing woman, she was born in 1900 and lived till 2004 and had all her wits about her until 103 and till the day she passed @ 104 never was in a hospital one day in her life, this has got to be a Guinness book of world records, gave birth to 4 children all at home and NEVER WAS IN A HOSPITAL, that's just amazing. It's also amazing when I think of all the change in everything she saw, she saw the wright brothers when they flew the first plane to 747's jetting through the sky from no phones to cell phones and computers, from no cars to all sorts of cars, it just an amazing thing to think of all the things she saw and how far the world had come in 104 years, god bless her she was an amazing woman, my mother is just like her too and at 82 has no wrinkles and plays golf 3-4 days a week and is so busy I need an appointment just to see her a lot of times, life is really something when you can stay healthy for a long long time.!

And you've got the same genes!
My grandfather is 94 and looks great! He's in good health other than the usual aches and pains. My mom turned 70 today and she looks fabulous! I hope she passed those genes on to me!

What a delight. Thanks for sharing. My grandmother(fathers mom) worked in an old-folks home until she was around 80 or so. I once asked her why. She told me--"Well, somebody's got to take care of all those old people." God love her. She has since passed but she was and still is an inspiration. And a little itty bitty thing too. I don't think she ever weighed over 100 lbs.

Before I start, I just want to say that I really enjoyed the OP. It was very interesting and fun for us. I don't want the rest of this post to be a downer at all. I am just going to do my overly-analytical posting but, I don't want to take anything away from the OP. Thank you for the post. That being said:

The facts are a bit wrong but, the point is well taken. Much of this is about the popularity of these things being household items. Not that they didn't exist or that they weren't even popular. I have someone who shoots these types of things to my email all the time and the "facts" are always, umm... out-of-whack but, the points are always spot on. This one really shows how different perception was 60 years ago.

As for their "facts", they are a bit off. Here are a few examples: The dishwasher was patented in 1850 but, it wasn't until 1950 that it became mainstream. The ballpoint pen was invented in 1888 but didn't become popular until the 1940's. Clothes Dryer's were invented in the 1800's and became more common in the 1920's. Most of these were "luxury" items and were available in upscale hotels or only the wealthy but, not in every home or as well known. Coke, was around since... well... forever (since it is in Coca leaves) yet, it was purely extracted in, I think the 1800's. At one point it was actually studied as a treatment for morphine addiction and was commonly prescribed as a pain reliever in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Yes, coke abuse peaked in the 1980's but, it had been abused since the early 1900's. I mention this because the original recipe for Coca Cola was made in 1886 and contained Coca leaves (hence coke) but it was removed in 1906 when people started to really understand the addictive properties of coke and addiction was becoming an issue. That is why I decided to start googling some of these "facts".

Anyway, if you watch a movie that came out in the 1950's, you can really see how different things were back then. Most movies and TV shows still had married couples sleeping in different beds. There weren't any "bad" words. Sex was barely hinted at. It is amazing how shielded society was.

I think the biggest difference between then and now is due to the media. Everything is about ratings. The news outlets went from reporting facts to, "An item every baby has could kill them in 2 minutes! Tune in at 11 to find out which one". Advertising is all about sex. TV shows are all about sex, violence and product placement. The media went from protecting-us-from-us to exaggerating every last dollar out of our wallets. Who can blame them though. When I was a kid, there were only 3 channels on TV. Now I have over 500. Stations can barely compete so, they have to do whatever they can just to get us to watch. Worst part is, I had an easier time finding a show to watch when there were only 3 stations!

Okay, I am done with my over-tired ranting. I really need to get some sleep.
