I put this originally in the new members forum , but would be just as usefull here also :

Ok so you get your ecig , you've read the instructions so you know what piece is what , Battery, Atomizer and Cartridge.

You know how to charge it, you know how to assemble it and you know how to inhale on it.
But do you know HOW it does it !!!

well , heres how ...

The cartridge holds the liquid, when the cartridge is inserted into the ecig , the cartridge filler ( polyester soaked in e-liquid/juice ) makes contact with the atomizers Bridge ( you can see this looking into the atomizer on a 901 or classic types, the bridge is external on some models like the evo and M401 ) using Gravity and capillary action, juice is absorbed via the atomizer bridge into the atomizers steel mesh resevoir where it sits. this is when user input is required.

When the user inhales on the ecig this action 'pulls' the liquid from the atomizers resevoir and into the ceramic atomizer pot via 4 holes in the side of the ceramic pot. This liquid is then absorbed by the aromatic polymide wick( which is situated inside the ceramic pot ), at the same time heating the coil around the wick and therefore heating the liquid until it becomes a vapour. this vapour is drawn up through the e-cig and out of the mouthpiece. REPEAT

If your ecig has a manual switch and you pressed the switch to activate it the atomizer will only vapourize the liquid that is already in the ceramic pot. Without the users 'sucking' action no more liquid is drawn into the pot or absorbed by the wick.

Nice one Apo, There is some confusion over which parts are called what. I've seen the cartridge filling being referred to as the the wick on some occasions and the bridge being identified as the part that heats the liquid on others.

I also made an illustration to try and explain how the e-cig works. Hopefully it makes it easy to understand.

Thanks Apo, I like your pics (or Kate's if they're hers). Breaks it down very well. I was never able to take apart an atomizer so delicately. I'm more of a Bashy McFudgy as well you know ;)

That material you have listed as reservoir material - do you think it can be called 'steel wool' or should I call it something else?

steel wool that you buy in diy places for finishing ( like sandpaper) is very brittle and lots of fibres come off of it .
The atomizer stuff Looks like steel wool but it must be treated first , I dunno , sintered maybe to stop it breaking up. It might be stainless steel but i think wire wool is a fair description for it . It's just knowing What kind of wire it is .

How can you tell if the battery is bad or the atomizer is bad?
I've been vaping for a month, and both my e-cigs konked out at the same time today..
I tried cleaning the atomizer with rubbing achohol & rinsed with water, dried, used a newly charged battery and still, no vape?? ugh... They've both been working excellent for a month until today. I have a 4072 & a Janty Kissame.

Hello... :) :)

Thanks for the diagram. :) :)

My name is Leandro and I’m from Brazil... :)

First, I’m so sorry about my poor English. I hope you can understand.

We have a forum about e-cigs in my country, using Portuguese language.

I want to ask if you can give me authorization to copy your e-cig diagram, from this topic to use in our forum.

I hope this can help the brazilian people to know more about how e-cig works.

I will place a link to original post and give you all credits.

Thanks very much... :) :)
