How to check for shorts in a mod

How do you check the coil for resistance and shorts with a multimeter? How do you check the mod itself for shorts?

Set the meter to resistance, Touch one lead to the 510 center pin and one lead to the top cap, should read open, then put a batt in and do the same thing should read open. The mod is not shorted. If you get continuity without the button pressed down something is wrong. Now to check your coil, touch one lead to the center pin and one lead to the 510 threads or the base. If it reads 0 resistance you have a short.
