I've done a LOT of Protank II rebuilds and I'd have to say the best setup I found was 7-10 (depending on what resistance you want) wraps of 30 AWG A1 Kanthal (round) in a micro coil setup. Fitting 10 wraps in the Protank head can be tricky as you'll only have ~0.5-1mm of space between the coil and the sides of the head (even less once you put the stem back in), but it can be done.
Micro coils are the best thing I've found for a Protank, and the 30 AWG has the best response I feel. I tried 28 AWG but it took 2-3s to really get vaping for some reason, whereas on my RDAs 28 works fine.
Also might wanna consider drilling or filing (you can buy needle tip files at Lowe's) out one or two of the air holes for better air flow. It helps a little but it's a lot of effort for little return on Protanks. I just don't think there's enough space inside the head for the necessary airflow to make clouds like in RDAs.
Another tip on Protanks is to take the little rubber "cap" off the stem and flip it upside down. This opens up the wick holes a little for better juice flow (you might have flooding if you use 70/30 or 80/20 PG/VG juice though, I use 50/50) but still keeps the stem sealed so you don't suck juice out.
There are tons of videos floating around YouTube if you search "ProTank II rebuild" but here's a great starting point, though I recommend using cotton or pre-made wicks instead of SS mesh while you learn:

I don't like SS mesh anyways, but I'm apparently weird in that respect.
Best of luck! If you don't want to do any rebuilding/customizing then I'd recommend one of the other suggestions such as higher VG ratio.
