A couple of things to consider before you ask. First, is there a policy on vaping? Most companies don't have an official policy, but more and more are banning it. Second, consider your co-workers - even if it is ignorance that would make them against vaping at your desk, you don't want to rock the boat too much.

After those hurdles are cleared tell the boss that you are a former smoker and have found an alternative that doesn't produce any smoke and the vapor produced isn't harmful to anyone. Don't tell him it is just water vapor, as that is patently untrue. The only way it would be water vapor is if you were vaping water. I think there are quick reference sheets around these forums somewhere that you could print and bring with you. Make sure to point out that you will be a more productive employee because you won't have to take breaks to go outside. Good luck!

Meet him outside of work for a beer in your or his backyard, say,"Hey, I'm using this vapor electronic thing to help me quit smoking, looks kind of like smoke but really more like flavored steam." And then, "Ya think I could use this discretely at my desk?"

If he says No, beat yourself up like in Fight Club and blame your boss.

My coworkers are already behind me quitting and are giving me encouragement to keep going. I asked them if they'd be okay with it and they said they'd be completely okay with it. My boss is friendly to everyone and usually encourages quitting, so I don't think it would be an issue. I just don't want to go in and screw it up and not have another chance.

I already did that once. I got a raise out of it

That's a touchy subject these days. I personally never asked the powers that be if it was ok since they are never around except for an occasional announced visit every 3-4 months. I did however ask my co-workers in my office if they would mind. They couldn't care less, and for the most part enjoy the aroma from many of my juices.
So... I decided what they didn't know wouldn't hurt them and that I wouldn't give them the option to say yes or no. There is a strict No Smoking policy throughout the company as well as company vehicles but they will supply, for free' smoking cessation products such as patches, gums, lozenges, etc.
So in the event I should ever be confronted, I could argue the tobacco side, they (technically) cannot use the "No Nicotine" angle since they provide Nicotine laced alternatives, and it's simply just an "easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" thing.

I would ask the co-workers who are around you if they mind. They may say no. Then I'd just go for it. I'd let them know if they ever have a problem with it, to just tell me. We already know that second hand vape is fine, it's just the distraction of clouds that could be an issue. Then yeah, I'd just go for it. Without even asking a 'boss'. Should a boss see and say something about it not being cool, then I'd stop. That's what I'd do. That's me though! *shrugs*

In my happy place
I have a private office, I close my door and take a few hits as needed. It is not unusual for me for me to close my door through out the day so no one is the wiser. I did an hour long conference call the other day and realized that I vaped the entire meeting without even thinking about it.

My boss is very anti-smoking (former smoker) and has been on my ... for years to quit. He made a comment that he does not see me go out to smoke much and he is pulling for me to quit. I did not tell him about vaping and I have no intentions of saying anything. One of the other engineers in my building switched and he vapes in his office without closing the door so I figure that I will learn the policy through proxy when he is seen. :)

well, rats! That's a bummer. At least you are in Florida where it stays pretty warm. Can you go outside?

Yeah, there is no problem with going outside. It is pretty cold right now though. Sucks. I told him it would save productivity time, but he didn't care. It is usually slow as a slug on night shift.

I work the night shift where it is relatively quiet(No big wigs) at the data center for my company. I was wondering what the best angle to talk to my boss about vaping at my desk was.

Thanks

I find that the best way to ask for permission when it comes to a superior is... "Ey boss can i vape this at ma desk?"

Dont be to formal about it, your boss is still a person just like you

Sucks they did not go for it. I'm a Manager at my workplace and just kinda started doing it at my desk as i felt the need. HR threw a fit and looked into a way to stop me and other co-workers. Lucky for us our work place policy is only for smoking (Aka Burning stuff) and HR lost the battle. Now I vape freely and just try not to be rude about it.
