A short should show a very low Ω reading, the same you'd get if you short the test leads. An OPEN circuit will typically show a 1 at the left.

If you're using a vape style, not a DMM, just bend up a paper clip and touch it to both parts of the fitting to see what it shows you for short, and with nothing on it to see what it says for Open.

What are you building on? Usually how I tell is when I complete my build and throw it on the ohm meter, I'll start flicking the coils and see if the ohms fluctuate (they shouldn't). If they do, I'll tighten down my screws a little bit, and pinch the coils a little more. My ohm reader will typically fluctuate by .02, which is normal, because it's not that accurate anyway. Anything more than that means that something is up

I imagine it should simply show a very very low Ohm right ?

yeah I know I could easily build a short and test it but I don't want to ruin my nice first build

You short out the ohm meter to see what it reads;

then when you use it to measure, if you get that measurement, it's a short.
