Red is positive a black is negative. There will be two other wires in there but they are data wires you can cut those back. BUT you might want to be careful because 5volts might be too much to charge most e cig batteries. My egos 650mah batts charge at 4.2 volts and i believe thats more then most. I would research it so your sure what your doing is going to work. Might have to reduce the voltage with a resistor or something along those lines.

I made one about 7 months ago (I'll try to post pics later in the week).
Yes red to red and black to black and you're done (I didn't solder my wires or nething, just twisted and elec taped). If you're using a 510 manual PT you're really just charging the inline 10440 Li-Ion batt which *should* have built-in pcb for overcharge protection.
Hope this helps...

Is the inline batt you mention the portion of the PT that resembles the standard battrey and has the button mounted on it?
I thought in line battery was that box that was inline between the usb plug and the assembly that the atty screws into.
Mine doesn't have the box, just straight cable coming out where led is normally mounted on standard batt straight thru to the usb plug.

Yes

Then, if there is a battery in the body of the PT, you will risk blowing it by over charge. If there's no battery then the only concern is whether or not the batteries you use can discharge fast enough to power the atty. Many different ppl have expressed many different ideas on this topic. Most ppl say it won't work, all I can say is what I know from personal experience. I built a flashlight mod thats been running pretty well on 3 1.5v aaa ni-mh batts, with a LR atty, and a slow draw (provided you aren't expecting a massive 5v TH).

All I can say is I would try it.
It should vape. It may or may not give enough vape for you. I would reccomend slow, long drags to get more vape out of it. It will not give the same amount of vape as your PT does plugged in to a 5v usb outlet.

If I have some time, I'll try to make a straight wired PT (mine has a 10440 inline batt) to try on my aa batt pack, but I'm moving this week so I doubt I'll have a chance. :(

I say give it a shot and see how it vapes.

Look on youtube, I saw a video there once. It went off like a flare.
However a few years ago there was a sticky made at candlepowerforums.com about an actual explosion in a flashlight using cr123 batteries.
The poster was not hurt in the explosion but had serious medical issues that were caught just in time became it became fatal.

Apparently the fumes from lith batts are very, VERY toxic.
