Good spot, and that is great to know.

Nevertheless, it can still be argued that significant cross-cultural differences exist between US and UK and that the data does not generalize from one population to the other. Implausible, but arguable.

We need the data. Think how powerful this would be in the public arena, too. Just witness what's happened since the UK study in the (worldwide) press.

As a followup to the other thread, which I can not find right now. All these studies can be used by the American FDA without change, and without needing to do them again. The exact language from the FDA follows:

B. Studies Conducted Outside of the United States
You may submit studies of new tobacco products conducted outside the United States as part of your PMTA. All studies conducted outside the U.S. should be conducted to ensure that the rights, safety, and welfare of human subjects have been protected in accordance with ethical principles acceptable to the world community and that the data are scientifically valid and applicable to the U.S. population. The investigator should conduct these studies in conformance with international standards for good clinical practices or obey the laws and regulations
of the country in which the research is conducted, whichever affords the greater protection of human subjects. These patient protection and data integrity measures help ensure that data from studies conducted outside the United States constitute “well-controlled investigations” (see section 910(c)(5)(A) of the FD&C Act) that provide reliable data to FDA.

In my experience, it still requires a lot of motivation to quit smoking using e-cigs.

Not for me, it didn't :)
I stopped smoking by accident - and immediately, as soon as I had found a much nicer alternative: my 1st e-cig.
And I am not the only one.

Me too. I thought it would take more, but it didn't.

Agreed.

We have several good studies already and they should be forwarded to the FDA.

I sent them to CDC myself already. :D

We have the most recent West study, but there are others: the New Zealand study, the Italian study , the French study, Dr. Farsalinos's study.

Now we need an American study. :)

I too quit smoking accidentally the day I got my first kit (Aug 10, 2011, it was a GoGo - Kanger's answer to the eGo). I had done a ton of research here first, and after my first try, I didn't want combustibles any longer (after over 25 years as a heavy smoker!).

Everyone's different, some quit first try, some quit after days/weeks of tapering, some dual-use, etc. Everyone has their own way - it's nice there's such a variety with these to accommodate them all! :)

Congratulations! And hey, you got 3 months on me! ;)
Yes, it is so enjoyable to find something that is so much better than combustibles!

Oh yes!
That is why it is so wonderful to have such a lovely variety of vaping gear, liquids, everything. Something for everybody. Just a perfect consumer product.

And, to my mind, it is always important to remember that we are all different. With different preferences, different needs and different habits. When a person starts to vape, there is no "right", there is no "wrong" - there is only "do what you feel is best for you". :)

While we're on the subject, I too quit easily and almost immediately after getting an ecig in feb 2011 with an eGo kit. But it was my 3rd try with ecigs. The first 2 tries in 2009 and 2010 were cigalikes and those did not do it for me.

I also started a friend of mine with the same setup a few months later, and we both continued to upgrade devices since then, but he remains a dual user to this day...

IMO, you do have to want to quit to stay quit. But I do think with vaping it is entirely easy to accidentally quit or cease smoking with essentially zero effort.

While I am proud dual user, I truly believe the addiction to smoking is broken. And as I have basis from previously going cold turkey, this isn't an inkling I have, or a maybe thing, it is closer to I know that addiction is broken. Plus, I know that if I were to smoke say a pack a day for a full week, then the following week vape (as I currently do), I'd have little trouble ceasing smoking, or breaking the plausible addiction I would have from that amount of smoking.

I have a friend that was vaping with Blu and at a point was exclusive with that. Going into that exclusivity they were dual using, and I know for awhile after the exclusivity was dual using, but now (as I just recently learned) is back to only smoking. When I asked why, the friend said that he figured if he was going to smoke at all, might as well stick to that. Obviously, all of us here would likely challenge that thinking, but as I am likely to see this person again (generally once a week), then I do plan to challenge it in my own way. But as I'm not exclusive vaper, I might not challenge it all that aggressively.

Anyway, I note the example of the friend because I observe him quitting when wanting to quit, but not staying quit because he didn't want to. Yet, I'm convinced if he were to vape / dual use, he'd greatly reduce and obviously, if he went with better gear than what Blu offers, likely would accidentally quit or dual use in way that I currently relate to.

Ukip vote in European elections no flash in pan according to new poll - Telegraph

Looks encouraging (to me), but not certain as to the exact politics of UK Independent Party. Wiki says "a Eurosceptic right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom, founded in 1993. The party describes itself in its constitution as a "democratic, libertarian party"

If they're truly libertarian, then they would likely not accept the 'right-wing' label*, but from the Left, anything non-socialist looks 'right-wing' :)

UK Independence Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

*looks like the 'right wing' label was from two professors who wrote and article "Ukip: Doomed to Failure?" ....

Hi Kent,
Just to manage your expectations: UKIP currently are a party with two policies (1) to get out of the European Union (2) to limit immigration. They have no other clear policies as yet as they have disavowed their last manifesto. At present in the UK they are seen by many (but not all) as fundamentally a "none of the above/protest vote" party. They have no MPs.

Thanks for the fill in e-pipeman. :thumb:

The 'Doomed for Failure' piece was before this last election :)

They're certainly shaking up the political establishment - and as this tends to lead to greater democracy I'm inclined to believe that their influence on UK politics to date has been broadly beneficial.

@Kent C.:
Excellent! This guy rocks!

Wow, and I had no idea that the FDA has employees that carry automatic weapons. I had always thought that those heavily armed guys raiding the milk farmers were the police force  Although it does escape me why farmers who sell milk must be invaded by "storm troopers" with automatic weapons. Talk about using undue force....
