I'm in long island, ny about 20 miles from nyc. We are definitely not prepared to be hit by a hurricane! At least as far as our homes and structures go. Might go pick up some plywood from home depot tomorrow just in case. The top floor of our house is new and the windows could prolly take the winds but downstairs are thin glass 50 year old windows - not going to be good if it hits as close as they're saying. Definitely going to be an interesting weekend

Jim, go to your interior rooms without windows..large closet ect. get water and food that doesn't need refridgeration. charge your chargeables and make sure you have cash and gas. Put your valubles, meds and important papers (like insurance and birth certificates) in a go bag.

Make sure you post and keep us up to date! Please also start a thread in the general chat on the forum..I just realized we are in the Women's Room!

Hi Potholerepairman.. Since you're not buying beer or gas, Would you care for some tea? :)

why your too kind, a tea has me moving like bolders on a mountain, with rapture and good thoughts.thanks ces, to scare the masses is never right but feels so good.does any one have a way to not scare em while still having fun? my bad.On to the cycle of fun , hurricanes are like babies they scream , spit up , blow your $ out the door, but still require you attention even if they are not yours.Your neighbors stuff is your problem , kinda like family so b-slap-em till they comply.

Stay safe everyone!

Definitely board up all windows, even the new ones.

In addition to what MK listed....Be sure to refill any meds etc that you all may need as well.

Stock up on batteries, water, juices, and non-perishable foods.

If you have and plan to use a generator, please please DO NOT run it inside your house or near areas that can get inside your home (carbon monoxide fumes).

ETA: Another item we keep stocked in hurricane season is a portable outdoor cooker with several re-fill-able tanks filled. Can't for the life of me think what it's called atm. Butane, propane. But you get the idea. Something to cook on if needed in power outage areas.

..If power is gone, so will be ATM service ! Have some cash on hand.
Peanut butter is a great stash food, high in protein.
We always put patio stuff in the garage, The heavy glass top of a patio table CAN be lifted and drop or sail ! Be sure to look at your neighbors items, remind them to secure them if they haven't.
Might want to pack a suitcase in case you need to get moblie. Easier to unpack than need it in a hurry !
Have things for the kids to do for distraction.

Be safe, better over cautious than regretful !

When we went thru the 4 hurricanes a few years back it was a real learning experience. Having been thru them in Tampa did NOT prepare me for the ones we had in St. Cloud. Thank goodness we had a pool..we were with out power and therefore well water for 2 weeks on the first one. I did have bottled water but not enough for everything you use water for.
here i would have to fill a trash can with water (run off) for flushing and rinsing off. We don't have our genni any more..but it was a life saver then! I keep batteries in stock now and oil for my 4 hurricane lamps. Also bug off spray and limb cutting tools.
