I started vaping almost a year ago, got some bad equipment (it leaked) and really awful juice at a local shop (they recommended for a beginner without even asking me what I liked), I was so discouraged I quit.

So, my resolution for 2014 was to stop smoking - for good!

Went to another local shop, got some good advice, bought a starter kit, got some good juice, I am on my way.

My problem - I just can't quit the cigs cold turkey. But, I have gone from smoking 2 packs a day to smoking a pack every 2 to 3 days in just 2 weeks. And I really don't like the taste of the cigs anymore, just old habit I guess.

So, have any of you successfully quit the cigs without immediately just quitting cold turkey? Is there hope for me?

Need some advice and encouragement please .

If you can't quit cold turkey, do what works for YOU! Don't let anyone tell you that you have do it this way or that way. Great Job on cutting back! 2 packs a day to relatively 6-8 analogs a day is a great 1st step. Just remember there will always be bumps in the road. Again congrats on the new setup and just remember that it takes time to break old habits.

Happens all the time. Took me three months dude, slowly stepping down like you are doing now.

Just think of it as any cigs not smoked is a WIN. Perhaps step up the nic level a bit on the juice and just take the small wins as going in the right direction.

Take one time of the day where you really need a smoke and try and vape only. Eventually do another time and so on. You're in good company and just relax. Good luck and many great people here ready to give advice.

You've already made terrific headway, just keep at it. I started out vaping and still smoking 3-4 smokes a day. After the 10th day or so, I headed out for my morning smoke after b'fast and it made me sick as a dog all day. Haven't had one since. Every time I think I might want one, i remember how miserable I was that day. Hopefully, you can find a point where you would rather vape than smoke. In the meantime, don't think about the ones you are smoking, think about how many you AREN'T smoking!! Feel good about yourself for not having them....and vape yourself through the cravings!! BTW, I smoked over a PAD for 50 yrs.

It took me at least 3 months before I completely quit smoking and now just a month later I can not even smoke one if I wanted to. My body is now rejecting cigarettes if I take more than 1 or 2 puffs.

The past week or so I've been sick and noticed something even more impressive, which is my drive to vape while ill is MUCH lower than my drive used to be to smoke while sick so I have to conclude that vaping is less addictive than cigarettes.

Good luck! You are on the right path.

Hi Dixie,

Lots of folk "wean" off, so don't feel bad. Feel good about the ones you're not smoking.

I started with 18 mg nic, at the recommendation of the local shop, but it wasn't high enough for me. 24 let me turn the corner. So maybe get some higher nic? And you don't have to vape it exclusively, maybe just at the "urge" moments :)

And you can always lower the level later on.

I also found automatics were helpful for me. Small enough to hold in my teeth, no button, very "cig" like action. (You'd want LR cartos for that, to get a decent vape, imo.) But don't go overboard on the small ones, if you decide to try that. For me, it was just a stop-gap measure.

What you're still smoking matters less then what you aren't smoking in my opinion, so you're doing great! It took a week for me to quit completely. When I started vaping, I wasn't really trying to quit smoking. Thing is, my mother bought me my first set up because my Grandmother recently died of lung cancer. I had to promise her is give vaping a try, but I never promised to quit smoking. I didn't think I could ever do that. The more I vaped though, the less I smoked until I got to the point where cigarettes just tasted nasty enough where that nastiness outweighed what benefit I enjoyed from smoking. It just sort of happened, and you are well on your way. Congrats on how far you've come already!

It can take a tiny bit of will power. What worked for me was making the smoking less convenient. Vape? It's right in front of me, ready to go. Smoke? Go get the pack out of my dresser, find a lighter, and go outside for 5 min to smoke. 95% of the time, the vape option was satisfying enough.

In the mean time, keep trying flavors till you find one that hits the spot. Incrementing up your nic level can help too. It took me four months before being off the real ones for more than a few days. Even then, I had one about every 4-5 weeks for a couple months before they finally disgusted me enough not to do that any more.

Lemme share my personal experience.

25 years of around 1 1/2 PAD. Got a little eGo kit in early December 2013.

For the first week or two, I was still smoking around 4-5 analogs a day. Then on the 18, I just stopped. There was no stress, pressure, or any other negative about putting down the pack with 4 cigarettes left in it. I still have an unopened pack on my bookshelf.

Since then, my brother and his wife noticed and started asking about PVs. I took them to my favorite B&M and got them set up. And I give them the same advice. When you are ready to put down the analogs, it will be a natural progression, and you most likely won't even realize you've done it. Keep doing what works for you.

(((Which kit did you buy out of curiosity?)))

I got an eGo-T twin pack. Been two weeks now and I am not unhappy, but will be doing research for the 'next better thing'.

One I keep my favorite juice so far, Tobacco Light with a few drops of Cinnamon Apple and the other I use for testing.

i did both until i found a satisfying vape, which for me was 24mg nic and RY4. Then i just substituted one for the other. I'd smoke as soon as i got out of bed, so i just take my mod with me now.

Some people seem able to quit in a blink, but it wasn't like that for me. I knew i had won when my smell returned, i no longer coughed and wheezed and i could smell a ciggie from 200 ft, and not in a good way!

I smoked 40 reds a day for 30 yrs.

Took me about 3 weeks to completely get off of cigarettes and make the 100% switch to vaping. It isn't unheard of to not be able to cold turkey quit. I tried that once and ended up going back to cigarettes. It's always nice to take your time until you feel ready enough to just switch to vaping. Up your nicotine strength and go from there

Like the others say, you may have to up the nicotine level to the next. I started on 18 mg, it was a little strong for me but it worked wonders. Some need 24 and stronger.

You're not alone in being unable to quit cold turkey; it's commonplace to taper off analogs with the help of vaping.

I too was unable to quit cold turkey; it took me a month for my to give up analogs altogether. I used juice with 24mg nic to help me along, but tapered down to 18 a month after I had my last cig. The bottom line is that whatever works for you is the ultimate determinant. Be patient.
