....and I mean MINI

The flash washes out the intensity, but these little buggars are real bright. One of the more difficult soldering jobs I've done (ruined 3 before I got it right)

Not sure how I'll use it; mainly wanted to see if I could solder one.

It is beauteous! I'm picturing several of these utilized just below the surface of a translucent mod casing in different zodiac constellations in place of a single lcd for feedback info. Imagine seeing your mod light up with Aries in red when firing your atty or Taurus when the power is turned on. Constellations could even be used to identify different models of mod. I would like a VV Aries in red, please.

Yea, those white InGaN LEDs are amazingly bright. I've actually seen spots after looking directly into one that's fully illuminated. I use them when I need to backlight something. They call them white, but they actually have a blue tint. They are the closest thing you can get to pure white in that class of LED. The flash on your camera makes it look more blue. They are actually meant to be soldered on a PCB, but I've soldered wires to the bigger 1206 ones before. Not something easy to do, even on those.

You can get ones more white with higher output than the white 0603 InGaN ones, but those are in a different class. They consume a lot more power and are not nearly as small. An 0603 is 1.6 x .8mm. The Cree lighting LED mentioned above is 3.5 x 3.5mm and has a nominal operating current of 80mA compared to 20mA for an InGaN. That's quite a bit bigger and quite a bit more power.

Yea they are a bit bigger (plcc2 size)but super small for the amount of power they put out . I own a LED retrofitting company actually so me know my LEDs . Yes the Ml-B's are considered High brightness LEDs and require heatsinking .The 0608/1206 LEDs put out on average .5 Lumens and the Ml-B's put out 27 lumens . A standard 20ma 3mm/5mm LED usually around 4 lumens in cool white .

Talking in terms of the output to current numbers you stated, the lighting ones are much more efficient. However, the little white 0603 indicator LEDs are still amazingly bright for how small they are and how little current they use. They're still really bright even at currents much lower than 20mA. I'm working with an LCD display right now that backlights with a couple of those. I only need to push 8mA through each LED to get the backlight plenty bright enough. They're also pretty cheap, but I see the lighting ones you mentioned at Mouser in low quantities for around 70¢ versus around 35¢ for a white indicator LED. So those lighting LEDs are still inexpensive and totally worth it if you want high output. Good if you want to really light something up.
