I can't stop getting a dry/burning taste from my new set up!

So I got an Innokin iTaste vv v3.0 recently, I also purchased the Kanger Protank with it. To go with the new set up I ordered the much loved Bobas Bounty. Being so excited to begin my new vaping experience, I dived in immediately and loved every second of it.

After the first day or so though, I noticed that I couldn't really taste the Bobas Bounty anymore, it was a very dry hit and then the burnt taste started coming in. I never vape over 4.2V or 8 watts and my coil was just the standard 2.5 ohm. I tried turning it up and down any which way but it never stopped with the horrid taste. So I pop in the new head that the Protank came with and instantly that one tasted dry and or burnt as well.

So I got a whole new pack of 1.8 ohm coil/wick heads thinking that was the problem. After an hour or two with the new head however it came back.

I've gone through about 4 heads now, I tried every which way of turning the voltage down or changing it to watts or using different juice I can't get that dry taste away. Does anybody know what is going on?? I love my new set up but I really can't enjoy my vaping like this!

Yeah - your protank isn't getting juice to the coil.
Pop the "tube" off the coil, and remove about half of the wick lying across the top.
You MIGHT want to try it with the little silicone "cap" that's over the tube removed too.
That should fix it - I do this with ProTanks and my juice is thinner!!
And I still get no leaks or gurgles - just a better vape.

Hi Shadynasty,

I had this experience with my ProTanks as well. I lowered the voltage to 3.7, and gradually lowered it as I went through a tank. I think you're burning your juice at 4.2v. I'm not familiar with Bobas Bounty, but all my juices fried over 3.7v. I watched a fresh tankful turn black; freaked me right out!

You can try to salvage the heads by soaking these overnight in white vinegar, then rinse with distilled water. You should do the same with the tank itself. Let the heads and tank dry completely before use.

Also, it sounds like you need to remove one of the two wicks from the head. There's a youtube video out there on how to do this; pretty much, you pull the thing apart by gripping the roughed up top with pliers and work it apart. The wicks look like two small pieces of fat dental floss. There are two, one on top of the other. Remove one, and save it to replace a gunked out one in the future.

HTH!

I have the same issue, and same setup. My question is, if you end up with that burnt taste, can you salvage the liquid that was in the tank, or is it garbage? Tired of wasting liquid and cleaning messes from the leaking and gurgling. Have dry burned, taken out one of the two wicks.....afraid to put in a full tank - but maybe I'll try it with something I don't really like too much.

You can remove the juice with a 1ml syringe and a 1 1/2 inch 14 gauge needle. Just put it back in the original bottle. I do this when I am trying new juices. I just remove the old and put in the new. A couple of hits, get through the old, and into the new. You can the syringes and needles at Wizard Labs.

Just re-iterating what other people have said, get rid of those flavor wicks. They're pointless and most of the time they just mess up wicking. Additionally, I find factory coils in the protank heads to be unsatisfactory. The first thing I do now when I bust out a new protank head is tear it apart and rebuild the coil. It's super easy, you get more life out the heads, and there's a bunch of youtube vids that can show you how.

I use 32ga kanthal and 2mm threaded ekowool with no flavor wicks at all. Right this second, I am vaping a 2.6 ohm head @ 11.5W (~5.5V).

Thanks everyone that has replied, really awesome community! I ended up getting a new head and took out 1 of the 3 wicks out, I also left the rubber grommet out as well because I don't know if that attributed to the issue. It fires great now! I also took the 4 heads that I went through and did what colokaren said and soaked them overnight in white vinegar, washed them down and have them drying so hopefully that salvages them! Would any of you guys remove 2 wicks and just leave the one wick wrapped in the coil? Or is that a bad idea?

Whenever I've taken both wicks out I get leaking from the bottom. With my thicker juices I just take one out and it works just fine, thin juices I leave them both in.

You're running it too hot. Even 3.2 volts can be overkill for a Kanger 1.8 ohm coil. Kanger coils don't need or work well at high voltages. I have a 2.0 ohm coil right now that could use a cleaning. Even then - it's only running at a whopping 3.6 volts.

What he said !!

I agree with all the suggestions. Bottom feeders have a real problem with thicker juices (high VG content). You either need to thin it down with some distilled water or you need to remove one or both of the flavor wicks. I finally gave up and have moved to iClear 16/30's and they wick properly with just about everything. I still use a protank with a wick removed but gave the T3s's to my wife who doesn't have a PG allergy. YMMV

This may be dumb but I was having the same problem when I first bought my protank. I went to the store and asked if I was supposed to take the rubber cap that is over the wick, which I was doing. Leaving it on solved my problem. I don't know about taking any wicks out. The tank did not give me any problems until recently, when it has begun leaking. Which is why I am on the forum. I guess I am going to do some hunting to see if anyone has a solution for that.
