So I finally treated my Gennie to a SS Mesh wick! I have been using cotton wicks for everything except Kanger coils, and had previously decided, after much study, that I didn't want to bother with SS Mesh.

Due to some recent threads/discussions on this topic, I decided that I owed it to myself, and my Genesis atties to at least give it one good try, and I am glad I did. :)

I didn't follow any particular method, I worked off the sum total of everything I have ever read, and all of the many "how to" youtube videos regarding building with SS Mesh. I opted to oxidize my mesh prior to rolling it, using a 1.5mm silica wick running through the center of the wick, and out of the bottom of the mesh like a tail. I did this because I didn't want any mesh touching the bottom of the tank, as I am paranoid about shorts, and wanted to do everything I could to decrease the odds, and probabilities of getting one. ... so then I went back and oxidized the rolled wick some more (rather be safe than sorry, don't laugh)

After oxidizing the rolled wick again, I dropped my wick into the hole to make sure it was a clean fit inside the wick hole. I pulled the wick out, and did a 4/5 wrap using 30 gauge A1 on the wick before reinstalling it. I installed the wick which metered out to 1.5ohms, perfect! Then I began to slowly pulse fire the coils to check for shorts, and literally within seconds all of my coils were lighting perfectly even, YEAH! ... But of course I continued to fire the coils on and off over the course of about 15 minutes, because as I previously stated, I am a little paranoid, and needed to be sure that my eyes were not playing tricks on me... but all was even and bright, with no shorts in sight.

Before officially filling, and vaping my atty, I decided to scour the internet one last time reading all that I could find about SS mesh, and shorts, just to make certain that I was looking for the right things in terms of shorts, and what to do about it if it happened ... 2 hours later, and a few more dry fires, I was finally ready to fill it up and give it a vape... Been vaping on this build for about an hour and a half, so far no burnt flavor, dry hits, or shorts.

I attached a few pics, a couple of which are a little blurry because my camera sucks  .. but I finally did it!

This is blurry as hail, but you get the point :p

Haha great stuff! You sure you don't have any shorts? (Joking)

Sounds like you did well. I'm sure you will find it a lot quicker and easier the more set ups you do. Maybe one day you will feel brave enough to go for the fabled 0.8 ohms with 28 awg, also. That seems to be the sweet spot for a lot of the gennie folks... including me.

Ok - but the proof is in the pudding...

How does it compare to, say, cotton, in VTF???

I have to be honest and say, right now it is very comparable. I may even venture to say that the flavor is a bit more pronounced on this build ... I am enjoying it very much.... I may give it a slight edge for throat hit too, but I will be better able to say after a few days with it.

Oh it was actually very quick and easy if I am honest ... all my profuse oxidizing and checking was simply my own psychological dysfunction  The build itself actually took about 5 minutes, but with all the talk about shorts and stuff, ugh ... I am very attached to my batteries, I love them, so the idea of killing one really messes with my head. But I would rather be insanely cautious, than mindlessly reckless ya know.

Studying the builds for so long in advance actually really helped when it came time to do it ... so thanks to all the many members who share their knowledge and experience. I would like to eventually try a 1 ohm build, and I have some 28 gauge Kanthal in a cart, so we'll see, but I am happy with how this 1.5 ohms is chucking the vaper. :p

Now that's the stuff!

Since flavor and TH are both there - sounds like you're onto paydirt!

I haven't been able to get mesh to work with my Vamo, but I'm hoping to give it a go with my kicked mech when they both get here. Until then, I guess I'll have to suffer through more cotton ;)

Good job, - looks and sounds like a solid build!

Thanks darling ... I am actually liking it more, and more. By the time the wick got broken in last night I was in vape heaven. One thing I noticed was that it actually wicked better as the tank volume decreased ... perhaps less weight to draw up?? When I refilled it this morning I could feel the difference in the vape from last night.

The good news is that I think my long silica tail that lays on the floor of the tank is really working for me. I get annoyed when I can't vape a tank til it's empty, but with this build I vaped it until only .5ml remained, no dry hits.

Based on this build, I definitely prefer it over the cotton builds that I was previously running. I didn't like that I had to change my wick everyday. However, cotton is still king for me in a dripper, and it also lasts longer for me in a dripper ... not sure why.

I have been using a SS wick with a sleave of XC116 over the top of the SS. It also wicks well and delivers excellent F,V,TH. Something for you to try in the future if you are experimenting with wicks. It is my prefered method now and I think gives better flavor than a KFL type RBA.

Sounds awesome .. I had previously planned to buy some Ekowool to use as a sleeve of the SS mesh, but I had later abandoned the idea of SS mesh altogether. But now that I am in the ball game, and it's doing really well, I may very well try it. I have only heard a tiny bit about this XC116, so I am not very familiar with it, but that will change shortly ... something new to research, and study, I live for that! :)

Just received a Kayfun style RBA in today's VAPE MAILLLLLLLLLLLLL :rickroll: .. A stainless steel Rocket, and I am definitely eager to see how it stacks up against a Genesis. But right now, I am very happy with the Genesis, and even more excited for my Kraken to get here.

Good to see that you tried the Genisis with SS and had success so quickly Nikkita! I remember when you were talking about trying it a little while back. I've always felt the flavor from SS wicks is really clean.

I got a Rocket in December. I tried it with cotton and a horizontal micro coil and could not get it to wick properly. Part of the problem was probably that the coil resistance was too low. I think I made it around 0.7 ohms. Tried a few different variations with the wicking and then switched to 2mm Ekowool and 27 gauge Kanthal at a bit over 1 ohm with the wraps not touching and that turned out very nice. A very simple build with a triple layer of Ekowool, making a loop on either side of the coil that I placed in the juice well above the supply slots. I've had a few tankfuls through that set up with the flow control open wide and it's not missed a beat. More intense flavor than the AGA-T, but I think the taste is a bit different which I was expecting. All in all a very nice vape and it does not leak no matter what orientation it's in :thumb:

Have fun!

Yup, I remember you were one of the dear hearts that I was chatting up about SS mesh ... and thank you, if you remember I said that I would revisit this whole SS mesh thing, and I did it! I am very thankful to all of you who chime in, and offer the benefit of your knowledge ... I am a bit of a knowledge nazi, and it paid off because by the time I actually did it, I was well equipped to get it done ... even if it was in the most nerve wracked manner possible

If you could have seen me, you would have been laughing your .... off as I sat there firing the coils, setting it down, firing it again ... ravaging google search, then firing it again. OCD was in full effect because I had a hard time believing that I had gotten it right so fast. But ... I have heard many others say that there first build went well, but then they later had trouble duplicating the effort so ... we'll see what happens the 2nd build ;-)

And thanks for the feedback on the Rocket too ... good to know. I plan on getting into that sometime next week, now that I got my JM mod today I kind of want to revisit my Fogger to see if I can improve my build from the last time. The flavor and throat hit was perfect, but the vapor production could have been better, so I gotta work that out. Until then, my AGI is doing a stellar job for me.
