The juice in the cartridge is supposed to be wicked up into the atty, but dripping onto the end of the atty is required to get the initial juice into the atty (3 drops on the bridge, which is the u-shaped thing at the bottom of the atty). If you keep vaping with a dry atty, it will ruin it.

If you get tired of dripping and using attys and cartridges, check out cartomizers. A cartomizer (carto) is a one-piece cartridge with a built-in atomizer that can be refilled many times. It screws onto the end of the battery, like the atomizer does. Do a search for cartomizers, and you'll find lots of threads to read.

So of the people here think everyone should drip and only drip drip...drip. The attys should be keep moist and when it seems to be getting a little dry it's time to refill the cart with juice. With time, you will learn to tell when the cart is going dry. Getting that real nasty draw - stop, refill, put the cart back on with the battery end pointed downward for a few seconds to let some of the juice get into the atty - then take a couple of draws to get the atty started again. The cart filler(fuzzy stuff) is there to hold the juice and wick it to the atty.

Direct dripping is a different technique than cart use, but a lot of people supplement one with the other. It's important to keep your atty bridge wet with juice at all times, and carts are often not so good at that--at least not for long. I gave up on them, got a drip tip and started dripping full time.

It's a lot more fussing and busy work than using cartomizers, but some people only vape that way. It comes down to your preference. I switched from attys to cartos within three days after I started vaping on 09/14/10. I have a few brand new and unopened attys that I bought (to stock up) before I switched -- that I'll never use. :)

I've done that but when I examine the cart, the filler is still quite moist- shiny moist. It looks a little indented though- could I have toasted it? Also, it only lasts for several draws- not even a cigarette's worth.

I agree. When I was using carts it seemed like I was always topping off after a couple of minutes and -yes- you have to drip into the atty too. I was thinking the same thing you are thinking; what's the point of the cart in the first place if I have to drip into the atty anyway.

So now I use a drip tip instead and it's a lot easier than meddling with carts and cart fillers all day.

HOWEVER: I would probably use cartomizers if I could afford it - they're just a lot easier.

When you use a drip tip, are you dripping directly onto the atty with no filler? I just got an eGo, but the 901 battery had a hole in it, so you aren't supposed to drip into the 901 atty, but you can with an eGo? Thanks for your patience with all of us uneducated ones!!

Just thought of this...is my not dripping directly on the eGo mega atty why it gurgles?

Can I replace the filler? I think it is no longer reaching the atty, has a slightly melted look. Maybe it isn't reaching the atty consistently anymore???

I highly doubt if the filler is melted. Just take a paperclip or a toothpick or something and drag that stuff back up so it's flush with the top of the cart. I just got sick of doing all this work every 10 minutes to make it work right.

Yes, you can with the eGo. In fact you can try it right now if you want - no special tools are required. Just take the cart off and remove the filler from it so it's empty. Put two drops of juice right onto the bridge of the atty (the little microphone that sticks up out of the middle of it) , put the empty cart back on and vape. You'll need to add more juice after about 10 vapes on it.

If you like dripping, you can get a drip tip for about $2. With a drip tip you just drip right through the mouthpiece and it funnels it right into the atty. No more carts, cart fillers, taking off and putting on carts. Easy.

This is from another post I made:

The mod that has been working well for me is well....I dont know what the name is, but you take a brand new empty cartridge and take the filler out. When you take it out, make sure and notice which way the fibers are running. You want to keep it the same.

Cut that filler piece in have, so you have two pieces close to square.

Now, fill up the cart with juice, and leave about 2 mm from the top. now carefully put half the filler, and save the other half for another filling. be careful not to smash that little square too much. just use a toothpick to work the bottom into the cart. the top just slip right in. you have to add about 3 or 4 more drops until it looks like a slurpee. trim any stray fibers.

I find this works well for me. when you push the cart into the atty, the atty wick pushes the filler into just the right position for wicking. keep in mind if you top off, you need to use a toothpick to lift the filler back to even with the edge of the cart. I had good luck refilling at least 1 time, and the filling can be bought (fluval polishing pad) white color.

I usually make up about 15 at a time, and clean and refill when needed.

I was in love with the tea bag mod for about a day, and found that it leaks badly. Taste is great, but did not hold my juice well.

I was having the same problem regardless of batt I used until I switched to blue filter material, and a few carts with BFP(although the BFP is a bit too wet sometimes). Now the only problem I have is with my SD with fresh batt, it still gets dry pretty easy, but 901 and 510 batts with 901 and 510 attys(adapters to go in both directions as well), I have zero problems. Great taste and great vape.

It takes a certain amount of time for juice to wick from the filler, through the atomizer bridge, and to the atomizer.
If you take a bunch of drags in a row, you can vape up all the juice in the atomizer without giving it time to wick up more.

The most obvious way to solve this is to wait awhile before taking another drag when it starts to get that dry atomizer taste.
Other things that work are tapping it gently like a cigarette, or shaking it gently like a thermometer.

Standing it on end with the battery side down and cartridge side up between drags will also help some.

What most people do, however, is switch to using a different filler material that wicks better.
That is why there is an entire subforum dedicated to using different filler materials.
Cartridge Mods

Also, it could be that your filler material is old or has been used too much.
This can cause it to not wick as well as it was before, and for that you can clean it, or just replace it.

And as someone else mentioned, it could be that it has been pushed down into the cartridge and isn't making good contact.
You can fluff it up with a toothpick or a paper clip if that is the case.

Most people eventually get tired of messing with wicking issues and just get rid of filler material altogether.
That is why so many people are buying drip tips these days.
