The gf and I were walking around the mall and decided to stop in hot topic for the hell of it. While looking at the band t-shirts I realized that I didn't recognize the bands anymore. There wasn't a priest, maiden, motorhead or megadeth t-shirt to be found. Id have settled for a ronnie james dio but alas, no luck either.

And it struck me, I'm getting old. Things were weird, the fashions were weird, I just completely felt out of touch. It seems though that companies don't mind raping my childhood for profit, there were plenty of retro teenage mutant ninja turtles t-shirts and the like.

We left, me clutching the latest motorhead cd ( yes a cd lol. I've literally never touched an mp3 player) and I just felt completely down.

Has anyone else had a "god, I'm getting old" moment?

Oh,for the record I'm only 33 lol.

My wife loves hot topic and rave... I get older and older everytime I walk into either and I'm only 32. but hey the chicks stay the same age! :toast:

Never mind, it seems like they keep getting younger. I probably am getting old I often say to myself, if I had a teenage daughter and she wore that, she'd be grounded forever!!

4 years ago there was a 14 year old guitar prodigy in our church who wanted to be in the praise band so much that he would go up and borrow the rhythm player's acoustic and play so that we would hear him. He was actually very good. We eventually let him try out and he made it with a unanimous vote.

He is a classic rock devotee who says that modern music has no soul. His mother says that she has to threaten him to get him away from the guitar and to the supper table. He is now 18 and has been accepted to Hodgson School of Music at the University of GA. He auditioned on classical guitar and was accepted. There are some teenagers who agree with our musical tastes! Wait until they find out he likes AC/DC!

zepplin will never die, the band is legendary and loved by nearly every generation. I went to a head shop a couple months ago to see if they had any Eagles, Stones, CCR, Deep Purple shirts and nothing. Everything was 90's rock and up. a couple kids ion there looked at me like I was from Pluto.

Amazon.com is a good place for shirts, especially musician type stuff. My wife ordered me several for birthday extras. One says, "Got Guitar?" on the front and on the back it has a picture containing nice color paintings of every style there is. It's kind of loud, but good for a party atmosphere.

They also have "Got Drums?", "Got Bass?" and one for most any instrument.

They probably thought you were an undercover LEO.

It also doesn't help that my gf says I have "old man" tastes and mocks me for it lol. I like ovaltine, oatmeal, pepsodent tooth paste, original scent old spice and brut, I prefer butter pecan ice cream, when I think of candy I think of sky bars and mallow cups, just stuff that really isn't associated with people under 70 lol.

I'm fortunate that I get to play bass in a classic rock trio 3 nights a week so I get to have a revisited and extended adolescence.
I'll be 57 in a few days.
The great part is now I'm getting so old that I forget I've played these songs a billion times. They're still fun and exciting to play after more than 6 years at this gig.

We play Hendrix, Zeppelin, Stones, ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Animals, Buffalo Springfield, ACDC, J. Geils and all sorts of blues classics and rock-a billy.
I love it when the just-over-21 folks come into the club and watch us oldsters tearing it up. It's fun to watch their amazement. They're not as used to live music (in Los Angeles anyway) as we were as kids.

The best part is the girls (and older gals too, mostly) still swoon. Don't know how much longer we can keep it up but it sure is fun.

Youre not so much old as they are young.

Good point and important to remember.
Just because the market isn't aimed at you anymore doesn't mean you're old but I know what xg4bx means. It's like a forced graduation and the realization that time doesn't stop and the world moves on without asking "are you ready for the next phase?" etc etc.

I can still find the toys made by Mattel that I played with as a kid on Ebay if I want to revisit that.
BTW. Getting old doesn't always suck. Lots of goodies come with it, like self acceptance and appreciation of things that youth has little time for, such as..."the moment".

Bassnut, your set list sounds like ours. Our church praise band plays the same music when we do outside gigs, so you can imagine the style we tend to play in our contemporary christian music. With the exception of the rhythm guitar player, who just turned 18, we are all 45 and above. Even the 18 year old says the new music has no soul. He has learned just about every type of classic rock there is. He has his head on straight, for sure!

The young people at church look up to us for the way we play. They never heard the styles we use except in old classic rock replays. The music of their generation is the pop style that tried to tell the world that soloing is just showing off. I'll admit that there is a lmited place for 20 minute solos and these were overused at times, but the talent for soloing has turned back into a chunk, chunk, chunk, on one root note for a while as the band changes chords and then they play the same chords over again.

I just turned 60 week before last. I grew up playing Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and all the people you mentioned. Our band alternated sets with the Allman Brothers in a club we were booked at for a few weeks in 1970. They were recording their first album at Capricorn records a few blocks up the street and Phil and Alan Walden worked a deal with the club owner to let them practice there during the week if they played a few Saturday nights for free. We didn't know who they were at the time other than that they blew us away when they played! We alternated sets on the nights they played and still took our share of the door since they were doing their sets for the rent.

I started playing bass & guitar around 1991 which was one of the worst years for music. There was virtually no guitar anywhere to be heard on the radio. I loved Metallica, but their music is not exactly for beginners. So I ended up raiding my uncle's vinyl. I ended up with The Beatles, Cream, The Yardbirds, and Grand Funk Railroad. Thus began my love affair with classic rock. I then discovered Nirvana, The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Then around 1993, music started getting better.

I feel old because I remember when MTV played music videos instead of lame reality tv garbage that nobody in their right mind would want to watch. But back in the day we had 120 minutes, Alternative Nation, and Headbanger's Ball.

I can relate to you, xg4bx. I listen to classic rock and i can always find my car in any parking lot no matter where I park. Buried deep within the crappy plastic round eggs the industries are passing off as cars these days, my 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis sticks out like a beautiful sore thumb.

I'm 36 by the way.
