Hi friends,

I did a lot of firsts today, and I thought it would be the in the spirit of this section to share.

I…
  • Bought my first rda
  • Experienced my first clone failure
  • Built my first coils
  • Made my first e-juice
My first RDA

I bought a Mutation X V3 (clone). The flavour is comparable to a Subtank and the airflow is comparable to an Atlantis V2. It was pretty much the only RDA I recognized at my B&M. I don't have anything to compare it to so i'll leave it at that.

My first clone failure

After rounding up kanthal, cotton, and ingredients for my e-juice, I started building my coils. It was pretty easy to wind them but after trying to screw them in I found that my centre posts were not milled properly. The threading couldn't take the screws and back to the B&M I went.

My first coils looked great, but I think I twisted them while winding them. After trying to fire up they basically melted in half.

My second try was a lot better - 6 wraps of 26G. I ended up at 0.6 ohms. After fiddling with them for a while I finally got them to fire evenly and without hot spots.

My first e-juice

After burning through 12-15ml a day, I decided it was no longer affordable. I picked up a PG based "Pecan Butter" extract from a local industrial bakeshop supplier. Estimating that it was between 80-100% PG, I mixed it with VG that I had bought from the local pharmacy at a 80VG/20PG ratio.

I didn't include nicotine this time so my cost per 30ml was less than a dollar. Almost nothing.

So how does my first home made 0.6 ohm dual coil @ 50W on my first e-liquid @ 80/20?

I would not use any flavorings from bakeshop supplier! Especially with "butter" in its name. Most probably you have diacetyl or acetoin in it, and may be in big quantities. They are not recommended for vaping ("popcorn lungs"). You'll be much safer buying flavorings from vape suppliers (or you have to understand ingredients of flavorings really well).

I'd recommend next build switching positive posts. That way your coils could be more centered and more equal on cotton each side. But that's just my opinion and I'm sure you will perfect your own techniques. I loved my v3 and hope you enjoy.

Actually just finished rebuilding and did this!

Congrats on all the firsts dom qp :thumb:. Just have a couple of comments.

I think once you experiment a bit more you'll find the Mutation X has a lot more air flow available than the Atlantis V2 does. You'll only need the extra if you build for and run at higher watts, but it's there if you need it.

I have to agree with Alien Traveler here, you have no way of knowing if that flavoring is safe to vape.

First off, extracts are organic in nature and can be quite 'dirty' compared to synthetic flavorings. I stay away from them. IMO the flavorings you get from most any vape shop will be a safer bet than these are. Flavorings that are sold for ingestion are safe for that, but inhaling them is a lot more risky than ingesting them. Compounds in the liquid will move into your blood stream much more easily when you inhale them and can be dangerous.

Best of luck with it all :)
