The YO
linux is much easiernow than it used to be. i had a verso on te laptop when we first got it , and the wife didnt know it was any different

firefox , open office , and gimp were the 3 main reasons no one would notice if my pc was running linux...

onlything i dont like , is you cant just reboot like windows , its a little different.

i love linux and i use mostly terminal , and i dont even know that much. the nice thing about linux terminal , is that there is an in depth manual for every single command. thats how i learned it , that and google.

good luck , try ubuntu or something easy like that. its really not hard at all. they have come a long way since red hat.

So how hard was it to switch and become at ease with linux? I looked at different OS but don't think I could ever learn how to run them like I do windows. Well except for IE8. I had MS calling me for ever trying to get IE8 to run right. It's the worst browser they've ever had.
Well look at it this way, it is about as easy as switching from tobacco cigs to e-cigs. Sure there is a learning curve, but if you are willing to stick with it and seek help on the forums (Ubuntu Forums) you can reap the benefits (any type of software you ever wanted totally free and open source, and more power under the hood.) It is not easier or harder, it is simply different. Just download a live cd from Ubuntu homepage | Ubuntu and try it out before you commit. All it will cost you is a blank CD.:toast:

is themini 9 the previous version to the mini 10? it seemed to be the same as all the other n270 netbooks. the only thing im not liking on the asus gig , is the shiny screen...

backtrack will be my main , with xp sp2 as a secondary.

how does gaming go on a nevbook?

Yes., the Mini 9 was before the Mini 10. Most netbooks are similar and some are better than others. The newer ones are obviously better with the newer Z series Atoms. They were not really meant for gaming, though a lot of games should run on them. I wouldn't try any of the recent games. Too graphically intensive. Netbooks were geared for light use such as internet and office documents.

By the way, what is backtrack? Is that a new OS?

The YO
no its a version of linux for penetration testing and network testing.

i dont reccomend it , as i have seen people get caught wardriving , and if its bad enough in your area , just having BT can get you in more trouble , cause all the little kids use it to mess with their neighbors.

my neighbors are .......s...i like to change their wifi network name to "i like to stomp around at 3am" or "i use all the hot water" , or my fave "TURN THAT NASCAR SHT DOWN"...

they dont listen when i ask them nicely , and flushing the toilet when they are taking a 40 minute shower has just lost its effect...

Well, no worries there. I never understood Linux in the first place. I picked up an old version of RedHad years ago because I got it for less than $10. I installed it on an old HP Omnibook 800. It looked nice, ran fast and I had no clue how to use the command line when the GUI shut down.

I'm a Windows man first and a Mac man second. Oh well.

Yeah, I'm not rich either. Those Mac laptops are pretty pricey starting at $999. I get a whole 6% discount through my office, but that doesn't amount to much. Still expensive. That's why I picked up the Mini 9. After all is sain and done, the Dell Mac will be 1/3 the cost of a real Mac.

As far as the RedHat goes, it was less than $10 at the time (I guess it was clearance). It was a big box with about 8 or so CD's and a few manuals.

And I think you're right about the Mac OS. I've heard somewhere that it was base on the Unix binaries.
