I had my ego in my jacket pocket along with my ipod, and I was with a customer when I started smelling burning atty. It must have really gotton hot, because there is a horrid burned taste now. After soaking in iso alcohol, it still smells and tastes that way. I removed the wick in this (not the bridge) and it still tastes this way.

Is there something else in an atty below the coil that can burn? Like more filler or wick material?

I've opened up an atty and noticed the wick can indeed be charred, even though the material claims to be completely burn proof. Well it was definitely charred.

Some people try ISO , then Peroxide dry burns, then water rinses. The idea is you heat up the atty long enough for that char inside to turn to ash then rinse this away.

I have reserected a few but then they don't really last much longer anyway. So I don't bother anymore. I read a great post a while back that explained it all. Basically once you have done this it's kinda shot. If you are a dripper remove the bridge and get a week more from it. That's probably the best you can do.

Most likely it was juice that was down in the mesh that surrounds the coil pot that got baked onto and into that mesh.
If it was just junk baked onto the coil through normal use then a dry burn would get rid of it.

But a dry burn isn't going to help with baked on gunk in the mesh surrounding the coil pot.
In fact, it would only make it worse at that point.

If soaking it in any known substance works, I would be surprised.
But many people do believe that soaking in some substance can cut through baked on gunk.
If you can get rid of the taste by soaking in something, you will have proven what I have never seen anyone yet prove.
