I read the thread about the possible Northern Lights so me and my wife went outside to check them out. No Northen lights but lots of what we call heat lighting. Lighting from a clear sky. If always happens when it's really hot and humid.

As we were walking towards the back of the property. I saw this bright ball of light in the air it was a good ways up. It stayed lit up for about 5 seconds or so and then just went out. At first it just looked like a really big oversided red star, but after it blinked out there was another one a little ways away and it did the same thing. A few minuets later my wife pointed out a another one on the other side of our property closer to the ground and even brighter, it also blinked out and then another one did the same not far away. Same thing really bright and then gone. The heat lighting was cranking away but in a different direction. The lightening was miles away but these lights were fairly close like maybe 150 yards or so away.

So is this what they call Ball lighting? Whatever it was, it was really cool.

Spent 45yrs in MN. Yes, that is my understanding of ball lightning. Used to see it quite a bit on very hot, humid nights in the Boundary Waters.

I've seen ball lightning "Dance" over Lake Superior on hot, humid nights. Almost like the mass of water is 'pushing it around' so to speak. Kinda' hard to explain.

It is pretty awesome to see, isn't it?

Check out this post. It might be the solar flare. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/lounge/111306-unusual-aurora-display-tonight-tomorrow.html

It should be more visable where you live.

I live way up North so I get to see the aurora borealis every so often. I read that thread and that was why I went out to check. This was not anything like the Northern Lights, but I do wonder if it had something to do with all the electricity in the air.

I going to go out and check again in a while.

Heck yah, it was amazing. I'm also very close to Lake Huron, that was were the heat lightening was coming from.

I've never seen ball litning. I'll bet it was great. Are you sure it wasn't UFOs? Next time check your watch and see if you have a couple hrs. missing. :D

I don't think I lost any time?:(

Yah it was really cool, I'm glad my wife came out to look so we both got to see it. :)

I seem to recall that the enhanced aurora would probably be best after midnight (our time) continuing into tomorrow night. Stay up and check again in an hour or two. I wish I had a chance to see it, but no. Once in Minnesota, I witnessed the northern lights ... very low on the horizon.

I've heard of ball lightning, but never witnessed myself. I agree that what you saw might have been associated with the coronal mass ejection. Especially at your latitude and beyond.

Heat lightning: nocturnal lightning which is too distant to be audible to the observer.
