It seems that 2014 will be the year of the dual coil clearomizers.

Kanger has updated it's product line with new dual coil variants (Evod 2, Mini PT 3, PT 3, Areotank 3, etc....)

Innokin has been offering dual head top and bottom head clearomizers for some time now.

I must be missing something.

What exactly is the advantage to a dual head clearomizer for the vaper. I can't really tell the difference, and the math to me doesn't make sense. Especially if I am rocking a variable wattage device.

Let's say I like to Vape my mini protank 2 at 7.0 watts on a 3 ohm atty. This means I will be dropping 4.58 volts at 1.52 amps to the coil.

Now I get a 1.5 ohm mini protank 3. This dual head clearomizer is using two coil in parallel. That means it is actually 2 3ohm coils. My battery will adjust to 7 watts total, so it will drop 3.5 watts to each coil so my flavor and vapor production is going to suffer.

To actually get the same vape, I'll have to shift to variable voltage, and set the battery to 4.58 volts manually, this will product 7 watts at each coil. So now the temperature is the same, but I'm using double the juice.

Also, since I am dropping 7 watts per head, I'm pulling a total of 14 watts in the circuit and 3.04 amps total or 1.52 amps per branch.

So to get the same heat, I now have to double the draw from my battery.

So a dual head does the following for me....:
1. I double my juice consumption
2. I double the stress on my battery
3. I half my battery life.
4. I pay more for heads.

And this is good for me how?

We have a bizarre market force going on at the moment where the Chinese seem to be embracing new ideas based on what the vaping community is doing without asking whether it's something its customers actually want or need.

A good example was the tuning of PVs to mean rather than RMS and some very strange power curves which seemed (on the surface) to give customers the power they were looking for but in fact (since it's been widely dissected by vapers) was taking the tech in completely the wrong direction - something they've since corrected.

Don't expect it to end with dual coils either - lots of vapers are building triple/quads now and there's no way Kanger will pass up the opportunity to sell you another incompatible tank and head design.

Some people like duals - my experience of them (iClears) has been... meh. Maybe if I was building my own duals (something I'm far too lazy to do) then I'd see the benefits but right now my single coil PT2 (which I did build) is giving me all the performance I need (and strangely, more throat hit than the dual coil iClear).

Personally, I think Kanger, Innokin etc. would be better off innovating their entry-level products to ensure more consistent performance and quality rather than chasing the latest developments in the vaping community.

i don't have experience with a whole lot of products, but from my experience with protank 1's and 2's and the iclear 16B, i will say it's not necessarily exactly as it would seem to work out mathematically.

running stock heads on the protanks, i could never get a satisfying vape at any wattage... especially without losing juice to leaks and gurgles.

however, the 16b vapes beautifully with no leaks and gurgles at 8 watts with tremendous vapor density and flavor for a BCC. it's downfall is it's plastic. it's very reactive.

i've been rebuilding my kanger heads as soon as i get them for quite some time now. having very good success with them. iclear 16B still gives better taste IMHO regardless if the protanks are keeping up in the vapor department or not.

and by the time i get the performance i'm looking for out of my protanks, i'm also running 10 watts as a bare minimum. advantage iclear.

though, rebuilding the heads is very economical for the single coil kanger heads if you can spare the time. and the plastic. that there plastic... ugh...

all in all, i think we're going to see some misconceptions revealed in the near future.

EDIT: though i'm sure there are going to be BDC's that consume unnecessary excess and those that chuck right along with their BCC counterparts with or without an advantage in the flavor department.

Also, variations in the two coils can adversely affect performance as well. The use of non-resistive legs becomes important I would also think that, if not adjusted, more heat is such a small area could cause wicking issues. Most anything that can be achieved with a dual coil can be had with a properly matched and adjusted single, and done so more efficiently. IMHO.

is not an issue on the iclear16B with 100% VG. i don't mean 100% VG with flavoring to thin it out. i mean VG base and thick, pure glycerin. no flavoring. 100% VG. wicks like a champ with the thickest possible juice i can think of.

possible, i guess. but again, with the iclear 16b, vaping at 6 to 8 watts produces beautiful, thick plumes of highly tasty vapor. no less efficient than the protanks. if anything, more efficient and better taste and production than protanks 1 and 2... especially with stock head/coil/wick setups.

it's good to be skeptical. change just for the sake of change isn't necessarily a good thing. however, it's only logical to base an opinion and/or assertion on experiences, not just assumptions. i have some of those experiences and suggest you get some too. it can't hurt. some of these tanks are under $10. as long as you don't run your tank cracker juices in it, the iclear 16B vapes fantastically at low wattages for only ~$7 shipped.
