I need a multimeter lesson please

If someone could please give me a quick "Multimeters for Dummies" lesson, I would appreciate it. I have el cheapo digital multimeter from Walmart. I figured out how to check the charge on my batteries, but I can't figure out what setting I need to use to get the resistance on cartos.

Help please..

It has the symbol that looks like a horse shoe. Holt the leads together until the meter zero's before you test.

EDIT: if the meter doesn't have symbols, it should say ohm.

Plug the leads into V and COM and set to the Ω setting. Place the probes on the casing or thread and the centre pin.

There's 2 places to plug in the red wire- one says 10a, 1 says V(ohm symbol)mA. Which one do I use?

And under the ohm section, it has 2000K, 200K, 20K, 2000, and 200. Which of those do I turn the dial to?

Ω. heehee. Awesome. I was wondering that too.

Ok. So. Next question. I'm supposed to zero a digital meter? After I touch the leads together, and wait and wait for the numbers to stop moving, the second I take them apart, it pops back to 1. That's what it's supposed to do, right?

If it's a cheapy then zeroing is not required (more flukes, etc.)

Going back to 1 means out of range (air is higher than 200 ohm)

alrighty. Each time I tried zeroing, it did the same, popped back to 1. It never actually zeroed, it read .4. So subtracting the .4, I got numbers that were close to what the carto box says they should be. .1, or .2 off.

At any rate, whether I am doing it correctly or not, it's fine. I really just wanted to make sure none of them were DOA, so that purpose is accomplished.
