Personally, I believe the safer the mech mod is the better it is. With your first mech, you're going to be going from a regulated mod with protection circuitry to a battery holder with a 510 connector and firing switch. You are vulnerable to hard shorts. Hard shorts make batteries get hot and vent gas.
If your particular mod has inadequate ventilation holes, it is an enclosed metal tube, which is essentially a pipe bomb waiting to happen. Amazingly, many mechanical mods have NO ventilation holes. Bottom holes are inadequate, because the battery may physically block the escape of gas. Only vent holes in the top 1/3 of the mod are adequate.
There are a few accessories that you can use to make your mechanical safer: Vape Safe Fuse, Evolv Kick, and hot spring. They are explained in the first link below.

Mech Mods with top venting holes?
What is it that fascinates you about getting a mechanical mod? Make sure you are buying one for the right reasons. Explain to me how a mechanical is an upgrade a high wattage regulated mod?
Find out if the mech you are interested in is a faux hybrid/direct battery mechanical; if you don't know what those are you're not ready to buy a mechanical. These are best used by seasoned veterans and come with added risks to the uneducated vaper.
