So. I think I'm about to go buy a dremel. Never used a dremel, just grinders. Now, what I'm about to say might make some of you shudder. I have a vision of milling down the catch-cup with the said dremel. Then, I plan to not stop and remove all paint from the grand. Gonna probably use one of those charcoal looking abrasive pad thingys. Unless you guys think just the sanding things work better for removing paint.

I'd like to do the polishing process. Is this feasible with a dremel? Or do I also need the various grits of sand paper? I'll need the metal polish too, forget what it's called. I know I should be able to get all of the paint off with the abrasive wheel, just like a grinder.

Anyone highly recommend not doing this? The paint isn't the best on it anymore and have been contemplating trying a mirror finish for a while. I want to mill the catch-cup down and I think this is going to be my best option to do it myself.

Plus I've wanted a dremel for when I have an LP to convert rda's to bf'ers. This just seems like a project that could also be used with it.

I milled my Grand into a LP myself with a dremel. Doesn't look the greatest but I dont really care, I'd rather be able to use my cyclone AFC. Dremels are great, you can use them for everything.

I know a few people on here have sanded their REO's but I think they used sandpaper to do that and used the dremel for buffing/polishing.

I'm going to use the dremel to turn my SL Grand into a mirror finish, should be awesome :2cool: (except for my grubby little finger prints)

I'm in complete agreement with you on milling it for effectiveness not looks.

Well I guess now the question is what other attachments do I need for it. This is what I'm planning to pick up http://www.homedepot.com/p/Dremel-3...-Kit-3000-1-25H/203040434#product_description

Remember that a REO is a. Aluminum and b. Anodized not painted. From what I understand when dealing with aluminum you need a specific kind of sanding/grinding equipment. That being said when I had my motorcycle there was frame polishing kits made just for taking off the coating and giving the aluminum a nice mirror polish. You could use a kit like that probably.

I say do not do it. You will not get a mirror finish if it is not stainless steel, If you have a grinder you can get some rouge wheels on it and some compound in the respected grit orders to accomplish a nice finish. I would always recommend only polishing something that needs polishing for an example brass or ss. I use this method on my rda's I brush them and polish them back and fourth.

I got this kit and it should have everything you need Amazon.com: Dremel 710-05 160 Piece Accessory Kit: Home Improvement

I'll probably have to order that. This is more of an impulse buy. I guess I can't really call it that since I'm thinking about it though.

Think this would work for the sanding/end polishing process?

If I do try it and fail miserably, I can just re-sand it down with fine paper to a bare aluminum finish though, correct? I wouldn't mind it being aluminum. I've seen some that people much more skilled than I have gotten to pretty close to a mirror finish. I'm guessing that since it's aluminum it will wear off quicker though, right?

Many REOs made within the last year and a half are powdercoated not anodized.

Older REOs were anodized and I think there are still some being made anodized? (not sure about that) but most of the newer ones are essentially painted.

Oh OK I stand corrected. Everyone I have seen was anodized

That's what I was thinking, that the black wrinkle I've got is powdercoated.

I milled a raw Grand down using a grinder for the grunt work, and the Dremel to finish it. Worked pretty well. Get a good way to keep it square and secure. I removed all other parts (ie Delrin cover, button etc). It did get pretty hot when I did it and did not want to chance any damage. Of course I broke the 501 pin putting it back in, and did not have a back up on hand.

Mine got hot as well. Wasn't too terribly hot in my hand. I left all the delrin in and pushbutton and was like hmm.. Didn't realize I nicked the button? Oh wait. It's melting. I've got a SO kit coming anyways.

When I changed to the cutting wheel it did not get nearly as hot. Idk why the hell I didn't start with that. I still need to finish levelling it off, one part is maybe half a mm higher. And need to get the paint off it too.

I'll look up that citrustrip. I know citrol will remove paint too.
