epaul,

I was a 30+ year heavy Marlboro smoker ~35 cigarettes a day.

I bought a decent kit after failing to quit with the "starter" kits.
eleaf iStick
3 - Aspire nautilus tanks
A few flavors that I like in 24mg Nicotine

It's working for me. I haven't had a cigarette since the 24th of November, and more importantly, I haven't wanted one.

I smoked Marlboro reds for 35 years. I had tried many times to quit by using low-end e-cig stuff you can get at the gas stations and they never worked. One day a little over six months ago I went to a local vape shop and they talked me into buying an MVP 2 and Nautilus mini...That was the last day I smoked...I started on a pretty high nic amount 24MG but am now at 3MG...

1) Buying good equipment is important.
2) Adjust your Nicotine levels. Go as high as you need to to stop smoking.
3) Enjoy your new hobby!

I started and failed on a starter kit. I then bought lots of mods and atomizers and ended up, 28 months later, with exactly this.

iStick and Nautilus (mini). :)

I have other stuff, but this is my day-to-day go to kit.

This here. Go get an istick & nautilus mini tank, some extra atomizers, and a few juices. Should put you right around $100, but it's a much better set-up than the starter kits. I haven't had a cigarette since I started December 1st.. and really haven't wanted one.

Welcome to you newer folks :)

epaul,.appropriate equipment is key. That, and flavors that you like. You might want to think about small bottles of different nic levels to start with.. Some need a lot - others not so much.

Don't be afraid to ask questions - I think just about everyone here had questions along the way and found answers to help them out. Good solid device (either the iStick or maybe even the MVP (V2 or new 20W one) and a couple of different toppers. Everyone's preferences are different. If you can get to a storefront where you can at least try flavors will be helpful.

Not everyone quits the same day they pick up an e-cig. Just remember the ones you DON'T smoke are the steps in the right direction.

Good luck!

Welcome aboard
I was a 43yr PAD Winston smoker. The day I got my first vape I quit and have only smoked 1 cig (force of habit the next morning) since (18mo ago).
Started with an Ego 650, cartomizer tank, and a bottle of 18mg USA Favorite (awesome vapors) ejuice. I quickly went looking for backups to my kit. Still adding to it today.
For a new vaper I would recommend an MVP kit
$45.16 iTaste MVP Variable Voltage APV Starter Kit - black / with iClear 16 atomizers at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping
Note: the link offered is just a site I buy a lot of stuff from, most any vape shop should also have it. At a shop it will cost more, so plan accordingly.
For e-juice I'd recommend finding something that you like at a local vape shop. I find that even the most raved about on-line juice can very often be disappointing, so plan accordingly. Nicotine level for a PAD smoker is generally 12-18mg.

Whatever you buy remember this.

1: Spares.....Gotta have spares.....A spare battery, spare tank and spare liquid.

2 : juice. If you dont like it it wont keep you off the stinkys..... Although the flavor of juice changes in the first week because it melds, if you dont like it straight out of the bottle leave it on the shelf.

3: clean your car/truck out, get all of your ash trays emptied and outside. throw all of your old smoking gear (lighters etc) in a shoebox and get them out of plain sight.

I like the suggestions on gear you've gotten as they are all reliable, dont require alot of fidgeting and are not budget breakers.

Take an unopened pack of stinkies with you on the first day of your ecig quit just in case. If you can go 3 days without opening the pack put them in the freezer.

I went completely away from tobacco flavors.....It made the few slips really really taste bad. YMMV

I love the iStick + Nautilus Mini combo, and it's what I've been using exclusively lately despite having much more expensive gear, but if you go this way, be aware that you need to be gentle when screwing the Nautilus Mini (or any other tank) onto the iStick. It doesn't necessarily need to be completely flush with top of the iStick... and you also just need not to be too hasty getting the threads to "catch." I haven't had problems so far, but many have had issues with the threads stripping on the iStick. It's a known flaw on this nice, low-price device.

(And just generally, it's good to be gentle with screwing on atomizers, whatever you're using. We've had problems with several of our batteries eventually failing to make a connection with atomizers, mostly (I think) because my husband forgets my advice not to screw down the tanks so hard, so the center pin of the battery doesn't get pushed down too far. The Nautilus Mini atomizer has a nice spring loaded contact pin on its end, so it's usually easy to make a connection without overtightening.)

If that seems like kind of a pain to be worrying about right from the beginning, another good choice is the MVP2, a great, reliable box mod that's a very excellent, big-value-for-the-$, low-maintenance choice that is beloved by many of us here on ECF and around the world. It also pairs up beautifully with the Nautilus Mini.

Congratulations on starting your vaping journey! I was a very heavy smoker for very many years, and vaping has been a blessing to me! And remember there are always folks here on ECF who will answer any questions at all and offer all the help possible for any trouble. It's a great community for support, information, and inspiration, so don't be shy!

I too smoked for 50+ years, and trust me on this, you don't need the "latest & greatest" in order to stop smoking.
(besides, you probably won't like the way these 'kids' vape anyway)

So lets start with mistakes people make:
Most think they need 'more power' when what they really need is more nicotine at first.
Most never take the time to 'learn how' to use a device, they just buy a different one.
Most think that 'first PV' is the most important thing for immediate success , when the liquid they try first is.

So let's get off on the right foot:
This is a good kit to start out with
    iTaste V3.0 VV/VW Express Kit - AltSmoke

I DO NOT suggest the iStick that others have eluded to because it does not have "step down" (so it's unregulated battery voltage until the battery becomes depleted to the needed voltage for the set wattage) Also the wattage is set by the "mean" wattage. So about one watt higher than what you set it at. (lowest setting is to hot for some)

I like the Soho that Altsmoke offers with that kit. YMMV
    I do suggest a RY4 (tobacco/caramel) , or 555 (tobacco/hazelnut) type flavor to start with.
    If you were:
2 PAD smoker you want 24mg nicotine to start with
    1.5 PAD, 18mg nicotine
    1 PAD 12mg nicotine

I like my iStick and it seems to work just fine for me. YMMV. I've read the bolded portion about 6 times and I don't understand. Please explain. Pretend I'm a 3rd grader.

OP: I was a PAD smoker for 45 years. I started out with primitive Ego devices and 36mg tobacco flavored juice (Red Luck from MyFreedomSmokes). That was 3.5 years ago and I haven't touched an analog since, nor have I any desire to do so. I've since switched to non-tobacco flavors, but I think I needed tobacco at first. I still vape Red Luck from time to time. Again, YMMV.

+1 to what everybody said upstream, especially the back-ups, back-ups, back-ups! I smoked 2.5 PAD Marlboro 100s Red for 45 years. It took me a little longer to make the full switch - I was really afraid that vaping wouldn't be able to carry me, so it took about a month of dual vaping/smoking before I committed fully to vaping. I've been smoke free for just over 5 months and couldn't be happier.

I know the iStick has some disadvantages, but I love mine dearly, especially combined with the Nautilus mini. It's definitely my all-day, every-day favorite. I also use 3 different Vision Spinners and they're great for out and about, and it's not going to kill me if I lose one (I usually use Kanger Protank 2s on them, and again, they're inexpensive enough that I won't be heart- and budget-broken if anything should happen).

Best of luck with your journey!

to ecf epaul . And we are glad you are here also. Just a wonderful place to be where people really care and want to help. You've probably already felt it with all the suggestions. Hopefully one of these will do the trick. As with so many before me, vaping was the only answer. I loved smoking and did it for 40 some years. Pack and a half a day but if I was to be totally honest. . . closer to two. Tried everything I could and finally just gave up. I only bought a kit because it was on sale and I thought I might be able to save a little money. So I did both for a good while and just kept cutting down on cigarettes. When I got down to a couple a day, they tasted so nasty to me that I just quit and I have been in love with vaping since then.

You have some excellent answers and suggestions, so I'm just going to say that ecf is the best place in the world to get reliable information, but we are also one heck of a great support group and there is always someone here if you need us or have any questions. Good luck to you and I look forward to reading more about your journey and happy vaping. Have fun.

I would really hope people stop suggesting using Fast tech. They are located in China which can lead to issues such as customs holds, your purchase generally taking forever to reach you and also consider if you ever need to return an item. Unless you live in China (or rather close) this is a waste. Buy as local as possible. Preferably in the same country. If you are buying in bulk, that's 1 thing. Other than that it makes no sense. Ultimately do what works for you (people in general) I wouldn't suggest it though. All other advice has been pretty solid.

40 plus year smoker here..I've not smoked for over a year. The key is a good PV and a juice that serves to comfortably get you off the cigs.
Some use WTA to mix with say a 12 mg nic juice. There is a good one here:
Whole Tobacco Alkaloid WTA Eliquid Ejuice

Just a few drops in a 12mg juice to start off with will mean zero withdrawals. For a PV .. well starter kits are so over priced. Specially when purchased at a B&M. Whatever PV you end up with..do not give up. There are plenty of old farts like myself that gave up on quitting the Marlboro's,. and can't stand the sight of one today. :)

    Welcome to ECF brother.

    Welcome, epaul
    several suggestions:
    1) choose the right and good quality e-cigarette product is important.
eGo-C, smart-20, nautilus, mini nautilus, atlantis....choose the right one which you like it.
    2) first to use the high level nicotine e-liquid, and adjust the nicotine e-liquid slowly.
reduce the real cigarette and use the e-cigarette each day, until you only use e-cigarette.

Hope it is useful for you. I believe you can stopsmoking.
